Cost of first service

So, the car is one year old with 16,000 on the clock. I have just phoned to book it in and Audi Guildford want £700 as - apparently - it needs a full service, not an oil change. For that they will change the oil, pollen filter and give it a "full inspection". The oil service (no inspection) is £385.

I thought £700 was quite a lot for not very much work.

Two questions, please:
Does this concur with what others are being quoted
Is the first service a "full inspection"? I had expected nothing more than an oil change at this mileage.

They'll be charging you around £190 just for the oil. When i had my Q7 they wanted roughly the same (£385) and I ended taking my own oil and they only charged me £200 IIRC.

They quoted me £453 for just oil change on rs4 b8 first time I called was £700 I just laughed and said no thanks called portsmouth audi do it for £373 I said how come guildford wanted
£453 she said not sure why we all work of same system so guildford lost my business

Thanks for the replies. I might phone around. Whilst I know these aren't cheap cars to run, I hadn't expected £700 for a minor service.

Anyone else being told their first service is a full one, rather than an oil change?

The first service which is oil should be at 9k miles.The inspection service is at 18-20k miles or at two years.MK,Oxford and Watford all confirmed this.Dependent on your service plan.
Price really does differ so does pay to play them off if you are prepared to travel.
Aylesbury quoted £343.37. for the oil service which is £5.40 cheaper than Milton Keynes and £27.40 cheaper than Watford but £10.10 more expensive than Oxford.

Thanks for the info, John. My car didn't suggest a 9K oil service, but I drive like a nun so maybe it thought it wasn't worth it! I will ring around and see what everyone is charging, but if it's only going to save a£100 or so it probably isn't worth the faffing.

You must be on long life servicing so first service is a big one.
I looked at this but wasn't happy leaving a twin turbo V8 so long between oil changes so have gone for normal intervals (oil at 9000, oil and inspection at 18,000). My scheme works out at just over £1000 every 180000 miles so more expensive than yours, but my car is a keeper (I always say that) so happy to mollycoddle it.
How many people out there have gone for the longer service intervals?

I didn't choose the service regime - it just came that way. TBH I agree the car has gone too long but it has done almost every one of those 16,000 miles on the motorway (literally) at 2000rpm so I am not too worried. (Except the running in, which I always do on long country runs to exercise the engine).

Mine's a keeper, too; I don't expect to replace it until the C8 is out - I guess that's four or more years away.

Amazingly, I haven't had to put a single drop of oil in at all. Level still says "ok".

Seems to be pot luck which regime the car is set to - and you can ask to change it.
Mine came on normal serving intervals. They use long life oil in all cars so makes no odds.

Oh man, these machines are made so underrated it is untrue, it is very hard to break one, and that's why you have warranty.

Drive them like you stole them, and care not for the servicing plan, you are ruining your experience over something that doesn't matter. You bought a 600BHP car and it should do that ALL DAY LONG.

Now down to cost. Guys the tank is what £75 to fill?, tyres are 250 a corner, and we're having a discussion about servicing costs. buy a £100k car, expect higher running costs - the audi service plan is a marvel and a delight, it saves you soo much money, outside of that - drive loads of miles to a cheaper dealer to save a few pennies??? My wife used to drive to LIDL in a supercharged range rover to save a few pence on the bottles of water.......

Whether I earn 10k, 100k or 10M a year I will always look for fair value. You will also find this is the reason most people with money have it in the first place by not settling for the first price some Asshole dealer gives them for a service..

Agreed, I am in the same boat. Don't mind spending money but I hate wasting it!!

Likewise...if I can pay €10 less with minimal effort somewhere else I will do it.

I think the issue with a £700 "inspection" service is that we all know they do nothing for it.

Setting up the desmodromic valve clearances on my mootrbike? It's a specialist task, using special tools, it's time-consuming and necessary. £700? No problem, sir!

Changing the cam belt on my RS6? I wouldn't know where to start. Just send me the bill, whatever it is.

But drain out the oil (and don't even stay with the car whilst it's draining - go and do the crossword) and top it up with fresh oil at 4 times its market value and then pull out all the safety belts (and leave them all "plugged in" so the customer can see we've actually done something), put a blob of grease on all the door check straps and top up the washer fluid (and in the process dilute down whatever was already in there!). £700. That's a rip-off.

At least with a Porsche dealer, they aren't taking in Audi A1s and doing the same service for a quarter of the price in the same workshop!
