Standard Sports Exhaust
Standard Sports Exhaust
I borrowed a C7 Performance Edition over the Easter Weekend to live with the car for a bit. The sports exhaust sounds nice and is a good balance between normal driving (non-intrusive) and hooliganism when in dynamic mode. However, I felt it could be a bit more aggressive in dynamic mode.
Would a Miltek resonated cat back set be a good option?
I am also thinking whether a standard edition would suit me better, so I can have the Sepang with lighter interior and spend the savings on a tune and exhaust. Any thoughts gratefully received.

Re: Standard Sports Exhaust
Pretty much the same decision problem all of us faced.
My final was
1. Maintain the warranty and just get the Sports exhaust. Still sounds a little lame compared to my last E63 even with it. I do however like the silence for the in car telephone calls, it is almost silent and everyone is amazed how good the car kit is.
2. Performance edition is a mild chip job as standard.
3. If you order the PE+ then you can still spec a normal interior anyway as a non-cost option.
By them time you have added an aftermarket exhaust and chip job you only have to pay for 21' wheels and you have a PE. With a warranty.
Of course if you like to play with your toys and make it yours then plough on and have some fun !
either way its a missile and after 1000 miles I remain shocked at its speed.

Re: Standard Sports Exhaust
That's a great sanity check - thanks!
Re: Standard Sports Exhaust
I have the sports exhaust on my performance edition but had the two small resonators and one large resonator removed and replaced with straight pipe from the stock cats through to the stock backboxes. This made a good amount of difference without massive expense. It's loud but not obnoxiously loud I feel. To be honest, it's still pretty tame until you're on boost. Zero drone at any speed and if you don't want any noise at all, move over into comfort mode and it's well restrained (but why you'd ever do this I don't know!).

Where did you get this done out of interest?

Re: Standard Sports Exhaust
Evening B,
I always use a place called PipeWerx based in the North West. We basically disconnected the front end just after the cats and gave it a few revs to see what it sounded like. Even then, it wasn't crazy hence we removed all of the centre restrictions. On a forced induction engine, you can normally get away with removing a lot of the restrictions without the sound drastically increasing like it would on an NA engine. I find the car well insulated so it's just the perfect volume at the minute but I had someone drive it past me the other day and it is LOUD but just the perfect amount of loud for the car in my opinion.
Also, even with the valves open on a cold start, it's not neighbour upsetting...like I said, the decibels start to ramp up when on boost.

Re: Standard Sports Exhaust
On a slightly different topic, is there anything that can be done with the standard (non sports) exhaust to release a bit more noise without going crazy?

Put a large hole in one of the back boxes.............!!!
Porsche 991 2S Conv
Re: Standard Sports Exhaust
You can also zip tie the electric baffles back so always open, but this just keeps the noise constantly at max rather than increase volume per se.
Re: Standard Sports Exhaust
Am I right in thinking you have to cut the OEM system between the centre box and rears to remove the centre section and fit a custom straight pipe? Looks like it is all one peice.andywaddy wrote:Evening B,

Re: Standard Sports Exhaust
That's correct yes. It's a fairly easy job and you could always create flanges if you had plans to revert it back to stock. We just went with an interference fit and clamps as I've chopped the exhaust in my last three Audis and never once has any dealer even so much as mentioned it, hence I have no desire to revert back to stock.Andy_W wrote:Am I right in thinking you have to cut the OEM system between the centre box and rears to remove the centre section and fit a custom straight pipe? I would post some photos but I honestly forgot to take any. If anyone is wanting some though, I could always get under the car and take a couple tomorrow, just let me know.
Re: Standard Sports Exhaust
My car is having a similar mod on Saturday. I can try take some pictures if you want.
Re: Standard Sports Exhaust
Zip tie the actual baffle? Surely that can't be a good idea? Why not just disconnect the electrical supply to the valve? That's what I did. Takes less than 1 minute to do lying on your back, don't even need to Jack the car up.Markp wrote:You can also zip tie the electric baffles back so always open, but this just keeps the noise constantly at max rather than increase volume per se.

i presumed they were sprung to close and opened electrically but if disconnects works must be other way around
Re: Standard Sports Exhaust
Lol, no they need the power supply to close and are sprung open. Look at them when the car is turned off and you will see them in the open position.
