Dave I'd have R8 as a Toy but it's not practical as a DD for me as the baby is imminent.

Does anyone know what happens with my cherished number plate. I've been led to believe I can't use it for 12 months after a theft. Is that true??
eddie, that is true you are unable to use it for a certain period of time im not 100% sure if it is a year but there is a period where you can't use it. best to get in touch with dvla and they can talk you through the whole process.

Hmm. Cherished plates, make cars stick out too. Not saying it was a factor here, but it easier to spot.

Maybe park the plate?

Doodle I actually think you might have something there. Never thought of it like that. Food for thought.

As Kev's said, the chances of this happening in the UK have to be hundreds of thousands to one & although the RS6 is of course more desirable/practical than many other cars on the road, i feel the chances of this happening to another owner are astronomically high odds.

I was on the road targeted in either my old C5 RS6 or E60 M5 (it was a good few years ago), where said undesirables were trying to get me to pull over on the M1, but common sense said my car was fine so i called the rozzers & i believe they were captured. They'd performed an identical incident earlier that day on the M1 & unfortunately that drive pulled over & their car was stolen (IIRC it was a Golf).

The only time i've been the victim of car theft through was my 2002 TT Coupe & that was taken by burglary while myself & my 2 (then) young children were asleep. The scum took up a paving slab & smashed my front door in, got the car keys & took my car. All this within seconds & although the noise woke me up, by the time i got out of bed & to the front door i could just see my car leaving my drive at speed & a hall covered in millions of shards of glass. What shook me the most was part of a paving slab had been left at the top of my garden steps & the police informed me this would have been used to fight me off had i been quicker & given chase (not a nice though). Car got replaced with very little hassle & since then i've not let it put me off owning better cars, but i'm certainly far more aware & security conscious.

Unfortunately it is true about your plate and the 12 month waiting period.
The worst part is dvla charge you another £80 to get it put on your new car.

It happened to me a few years ago so been through it.

An update guys. Fock Fock and more Fock off. Focking p1ssed off with GAP. Because I want to reject a replacement RS they are sticking with their policy that due to my rejection they will not pay the difference upto invoice value. A big fat zero is all they will pay.
I'm left with no choice but to take the replacement new car which is not what I wanted to do.

Never mind. Anyone interested in buying a pre registered delivery mileage RS6

Common issue with RSs. Probably the same for other brands too. They all fit the trackers in one of 2 or 3 places and the thieves know exactly where these places are so render the tracker useless soon after stealing the car.
Surely the industry must come up with an answer to these horrible thefts. There must be a way to protect us from this type of crime. Were we not better off back in the days when cars were easy to steal? Cars are still getting stolen now, probably more than they used to be, but they'd go without and danger to us or our families. I know the answer is not to lower the car security but we were much better off 20 years ago. Someone needs to come uo with a way to make it pointless in stealing these cars. Self destruct button?

Having spoke to a friend who is an installer, I am told that the biggest issue with trackers and the like, is the rate of pay for engineers to carry out an install - its literally a £60 install, and if you're doing them properly, where no-one will find them, you might just fit two a day. So those doing the fitting will put them in the easiest (recommended) place and crack-on, not the hardest to find place. Which means common locations. Needless to say, its work he no longer accepts because there isn't the allowance to do the job properly, despite the high up-front cost punters pay to buy one.

There are other equally silly regs on Cat 6 systems and immobilisers and their activation. If you knew, you wouldn't even buy one, but they don't wan't you to know. All it does is tick an insurance company box.

Eddie, I'm staggered to have read through this post - is this really Great Britain ffs? And I'm really sorry to hear of your experience, but like others have said, its only a car. You still have your health but maybe a little less sanity. The human race is leaning harder on the self destruct button, and we're living in an increasingly unpleasant society that's already showing a lack of manners and decency. Think I'll stick with the less desirable and stealthy S4.... Maybe the Yanks do have it right with the 2nd amendment....

Any decent insurer pays out the price you paid for the car (invoice price) in the first 12 months if the car was brand new?

Is it a like for like replacement or are they trying to force you into a lower spec'd car?

Surely (& i'm no GAP expert) they're only required to replace the car with a new like for like equivalent, so assuming the replacement isn't cheaper/lower spec than the one stolen, they've done what the policy says?

Yea Ian the car was brand new I am the first keeper. Due to this Aviva are only offering a exact like for like RS6 or £65,500 pay out. My words were hang on its gonna cost you £xx,xxx to buy me a new one so you should pay me atleast that you are not gonna get a new one for £65,500 it'll be more like (I'm only guessing here ) £74,000 with whatever discounts. My net invoice value was £84,716 I had £9,000 of discounts so I'm only reckoning they'll get roughly the same. I'd happily walk away with £74,000 but not £65,500.

What are their terms on "replacement" car? That is to say, what is the definition?
Also, how was the package sold to you, how did the 'salesman' explain the package? What were their words used and were there any supporting emails? I have a distinct feeling that the gap was explained to you differently to how it would/is executed, that is, it was explained differently in order for a sale and if you'd known how it would be executed, you'd not have taken this particular gap insurance.
No matter where you go, there you are.

Bam you have an excellent point there. It has already crossed my mind and I have called Audi (sales guy of till tomoz) who sold me the GAP insurance. I was sold the policy with the idea that if anything happened to my car during the 3 year policy and my loss involved a deficit to invoice value then this GAP policy would pick up the difference. Never and I mean never was I ever told that within the first year of ownership that if I reject a replacement car I'd get sweet Ffuck all. Don't worry Bam excellent comment and I'm on it like a car bonnet.

Which type were you sold?

Finance GAP insurance. If you’ve borrowed money to buy the car, you might still owe more than the insurance company will pay out. Finance GAP insurance pays the finance company enough to cover your debt – you’ll be left with no car and no money, but at least you won’t be in the red.

Return-to-invoice insurance. This is designed to top up the payment from your car insurance so that you get back exactly what you paid for the car (or any outstanding finance). This type of policy can be bought for both new and older cars.

New car (or ‘vehicle replacement’) GAP insurance. This is like return-to-invoice insurance, but it’s designed to compensate for the rising cost of cars, or where a discount has been given on the cost of the car which may not be available again in the future. New car GAP insurance makes sure you get your money back plus a bit more, so you can replace your car for a new one of the same model and specification.
