380mm Discs
380mm Discs
While I was visiting HiSpec I got into conversation with the guy (Geoff) who owns the company and is responsible for the development work. I mentioned to him the problems that some of the guys here where having with 380mm discs.
He says that you shouldn't use cross drilled discs of that size on a heavy car doing track days 'cos they will fracture & warp. Apparently cross-drilled is fine with light(er) weight cars.
At which point I was ushered into his development workshop to see his prototype calipers & discs....
He has a new rotor & bell combination which is/will be availble in 335, 355 & 380mm size which is grooved, curved veined & is fully floating on the bells. This is specifically designed for heavy cars which do track days. He says that you boys will not be able to warp them !
Also he has the prototype of a very large six pot caliper which has a large pad area (the standard Monster 4/6-pot is 135mm pad) of 150mm.
And (this is going on a bit!) he showed me a set of powder coated red calipers which looked the dogs.
If anyone is interested in having a look at this kit he's offered to allow me to bring the new stuff to Castle Combe.
Anyone want me to bring them with me ???
Cheers

Sounds a great idea Jeff Be good to see some fresh ideas in this area.

Re: 380mm Discs
It looks like I might be in the market for some combined development work on an RS4 brake system. Do you think they would be interested? I was working with Alcon, but things have gone awfully quiet...

Can't beat a bit of boost!
Re: 380mm Discs
OK, I'll bring the stuff along.
The kits will fit virtually anything with the right bells and caliper mounts. He already has the drawings for the RS4, S4 and (I think) the S3.

Re: 380mm Discs
cool - there are a couple of us looking for S3 brake upgrades at the moment...

Could be right John, just need someone to try special air ducting to these things and see how it works

Phil
I'm sure that he'd be interested in talking....I don't know what your idea is so can't say more than that.
If your going to use cooling ducts then make sure that you aim them at the center of the discs rather than the edge.

Carbon discs.....old hat mate, you need ceramic rotors, now that's a Porsche kit worth having !
Re: 380mm Discs
Yeah the Porsche PCCB disks!
Apperently they have no fade and last around 300,000 kilometres! wicked

I`m just a hardcore petrol head Re: 380mm Discs
Guys, I think John is talking about carbon fibre ducting onto the discs, not carbon fibre discs/pads.
I reckon effective cooling is half the battle, regardless of the quality of brake system fitted.
