Electric Steering Column Adjustment

Post by 23skip » Thu Dec 03, 2015 11:07 am

Has anyone experienced problems with the electric steering column adjustment. Mine has stopped working (Up/down adjustment only, In/Out still works) for the second time. The first time the dealer said I had put too much weight on the wheel when getting in/out of the car, fixed the fault and charged a lot for the fix with no further explanation! Now it has failed again. Is there anything I can do (reset, adjust etc.) to avoid another expensive trip to the dealer?
Any help would be appreciated

I would check the switch first. Pull it out and check for correct operation with a multimeter. Then I'd look at the motors. Maybe pull the suspect one out and check it. Not sure if it's a stepper motor. Will have a look at the electrical diagrams.

Yup. Pretty sure it's the same deal though.

^^That definitely sounds like it's worth a try.

J519 is the module that controls the steering column motors. There are 3 large fuses associated with it, so it's worth checking those, too. 32, 33 and 34 in the left dash panel.

Thanks for the suggestions, finally got round to taking a look. TomRS - I presume this need some diagnostic equipment that I don't have access to. Shoppinit - have checked fuses 32, 33, 34 all OK, also 13 (Steering column switch module) and 42 (Steering Column adjustment), also both OK, so no joy. Also now my electric glovebox has decided not to open (I have found the manual override) so looks like I have electrical gremlins. Looks like more expense at the dealer.

Whereabouts are you? Maybe there's a friendly bod with a Vagcom that can check it out / reset it for you.
