Soon to be S4 owner

Post by aarond » Sun Nov 29, 2015 5:10 pm

Hi,

Been lurking for a while but finally plucked up the courage to put a deposit down. Was concerned about mileage but see some monster mileages around so that put me at ease a bit.

Any thoughts....

Looks good, and decent price for dealer car

Buying from Audi always a good way of getting peace of mind with the solid warranty - just in case though, be sure to go over it very thoroughly straight after taking delivery and if anything doesn't seem right get the supplying dealer to sort immediately

Oh and FON! :bigwave:

Things to keep an eye out for, Oil leaks underneath... Higher milleage means you may find the Adaptive headlights swivel motor/sensor fails, thats a whole new unit at £1105 per corner.

Steering rack leaking issues were common on the early cars, check make sure its not leaking as its an engine out job, get them to inspect it and have it in writing that its free of issues so you have comback if anything arises.

Inspect the brakes, discs are very expensive at around £350 per disc for the front and similar for the back, pads are £200-300ish depending on what you want to go for.

Make sure the gearbox doesn’t “bang” into gear on 3rd to 4th changes as that will mean it’ll need a gear set, if all is fine and it feels smooth I’d have the fluid changed as “sealed for life” is a load of crap and MRC and the like say it should be done every 20k or so and at 80k it’ll be very very dirty fluid, re-adapt the gearbox after having fluid changed in order for it to learn the new fluid (co-effiecnt of friction is changed etc so a relearn helps a lot)

Check make sure it’s had its spark plugs changed as this is a £400 job from Audi.

Get Audi to print you out the service history as per there system and the options list and make sure everything checks out, you can just ring Audi customer care UK for this info (you’ll need chassis number or reg)

Secondary Air Injection (SAi) is also a common failure, so you want the car scanning whilst your present, it wont through an EML light it will just show up as a fault, usually saying “low flow bank 1”

Make sure everything looks as it should ask them to inspect the water pipes that run over the top of the arch liner, these sometimes corrode quite badly.

Hope that helps!

But bear in mind that all of the above (bar worn disks) would either be covered by the warranty if it went wrong later, or in the case of spark plugs overdue a change, something that you could push the dealer to do as part of the deal. The warranty you get from Audi is very comprehensive, with the only exclusion of any note being 'trim'

i do apologise i didnt know it had Extended warranty, great warranty but read below as these arent covered.

I'd also make sure the above is good even though it comes with warranty, good practise to buy a good car rather than one that will need work regardless of the warranty.

Well this didn't happen in the end pretty gutted.

If we say a miscommunication may be fair but basically after that my gut then told me to walk away. I was travelling along way to get the car (flying down) and had to listen to my gut. I am pretty gutted but after being burned once I am extra cautious maybe to my own detriment at times.

Advice to anyone always book a flight that can be cancelled, mine is non refundable was £210 to make it a refundable one I chose not to get this and get the basic fair. As a result no refund.

Fairest thing to say is a miscommunication and as everything was done based on trust / conversations as i stay over 400 miles away I then just felt very uneasy with the whole thing. Pretty gutted as should have been flying down just now, but for me it was a lot of money and after this just felt uneasy.

maybe it was meant to be, there are plenty of cars around TomRS has provided some great information which should stand you well for the next car you consider. an audi warranty is good but I wouldn't let that sway me from considering a car. there are a lot of good specialists around who can help resolve any issue.

Well just back from a drive in an S4...Deposit placed pick up Wednesday :biggrin3:

Loved it.http://www.john-clark.co.uk/audi/used-c ... k-edition/

Mileage is actually sitting at 36K and not 30 as advertised but they are doing the (major) service prior to pick up.

Well pick up didn't happen due to epc light and that car died and couldn't pull away from
where the dealer parked it

they are now having a look at timing chain... The thoughts are timing chain tensioner possibly failed but just a guess by the sounds of it just now and they are working to get to the timing chain.
