Pioneer aftermarket head unit RS4 B7 (CarPlay?)

Post by Wotsirb » Mon Sep 28, 2015 10:23 pm

Does anyone have any experience running an aftermarket head unit in their RS4?

Thinking of running one to make the car more modern/so I can fully integrate my phone (as sat Nav too!)

Pioneer state that it's possible to run OEM optical sensors on screen, has anyone achieved this?

See one of the links in my signature to see what I did with the stereo.
I don't understand what you mean by OEM optical sensors? Do you mean the parking sensors?

Yeah the parking sensors. They're visible on screen, no?

I've fitted the pioneer to my 996. Looks good, easy fit. It says you can have external cameras etc. But not sure how it would work, I'm guessing you'd need some sort of harness?

No, not on the B7. Later cars have this feature but its not possible on the B7.

Moat headunits will allow you to fit an external camera and plug them into the headunit. Mine I think will accept 3 cameras. One will turn on when you select reverse gear, the others are manually selectable I think.

Yer that's about the same with this unit too.

Only issues I can think of with the unit are...

1. The look and feel between the pioneer app and the car play is very different (minor issue).

2. The volume is different for the pioneer app (radio) and the car play.

3. I haven't found out how to get the video for iPhone working from the same connection as car play. I don't think you can do it!

Thanks for the info guys!

You mean video from your phone? Isn't this something to do with the way the H/U is wired? Most are wired up to the handbrake so you can only watch video whilst Parked?

Yer you're right but in this case it's that you can't use the hdmi lead and AV iPhone interface to connect to CarPlay. You can only use a string hot lightening connector.

You wouldn't be able to use it for CarPlay no, however you could use it for video out surely if you weren't connected via lightening?

Yer I think I'm going to fit two lightening cables. One for video and one for CarPlay! Just seems a bit weongz

What about one of these? http://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/MD ... av-adapter

Maybe it will allow you to carplay (as the data is going in) but also allow video out via HDMI as the data is going out? Be worth a shot as Apple have a 14 day open box returns policy if you buy from one of their stores?
