2004 RS6 - Reverse gear problem

Post by geordieRS6 » Wed Sep 02, 2015 6:21 pm

Aareet everyone.... I'm new to forums of any kind, but have been reading this one from afar for a while. So, I thought I'd sign up.
Lets get straight to the point, I have a 2004 RS6, red, half leather, mint condition and I'm very very happy with it. Awesome performance. The problem is, recently when I select reverse gear, all of the selector lights, light up and it goes into limp mode with quite a sharp thud.
Like I said , I have looked on this forum for some answers and things differ from a f125 switch ???? to a full rebuild of the gearbox. I did research these cars before I bought, and I know they suffer from gearbox probs, but...its so quick I had to have it. This will reset when I switch ignition off, so I can select all other gears no probs, but every time I go for reverse, same happens. I am a lover of cars but unfortunately only done some basic repairs. Any help in what I should try first, before I remortgage the kids to pay for a new gearbox would be greatly appreciated!!!! Also if you know of anywhere in Essex ( my current abode ) that is reliable enough to do work to my treasure.
Many thanks in advance.

I suspect the first thing you should do mate is get it scanned on Vagcom and see what it comes up with. Either see who is local to you, or order a eBay lead and download the lite version and have a go yourself.

Thanks for the reply. Had a look on ebay, theres a lot of leads. Are they all pretty similar. Is there a specific spec? Or just as long as it is compatible with Audis?
Sorry, but never attempted this!! Do appreciate you help.
Cheers. :biggrin3:

is there no one local to you with a cable? You've not got your location in your profile so we can't tell from here.

I am in Southend on sea. Im sure there is somewhere around here, however the leads are dead cheap so I would have a go if they're fairly generic. Just not sure which one to buy. They sound pretty similar like. If u have any recommendations on leads or reliable place to take it, that would be most helpful.
Cheers.

The only lead I'd recommend is a genuine ross-tech cable - for many cars you need dual k-line support, which the cheap ebay cables can't provide. The ebay cables are also unreliable and have no software (or hardware!) support should you need it. The main UK supplier is Gendan Automotive.

Thanks for the help. I have done a bit of searchin and am gonna take to a place in southend that specialises in prestige auto transmissions. They have a good rep, so hopefully they can tell me whats up. Still considering getting the Vagcom like, sounds like a good tool to have for many things. Will let you know what happens. Appreciate your help so far
Cheers

OK.....so good news and bad news....took it to a local garage ( audi specialist ) to get Vagcom read ( which he did for free !!! Nice ). Error code says the problem is the f125 range sensor??. He did describe what is involved in replacing this and quoted me about 750 to 1000 pound to repair !!!!!
Needs the car for 7 to 10 days !! Is this normal price? Sounds excessive to me, but no experience of this.
Anyone had the same problem? What did it cost?

Please let me know.

Good news !!! Got the codes read and garage phoned the RAC, who I have a warranty with. Their gonna pay for all the work. Massive relief !!! Over a grand. Phew.
Thanks for all the help.

However, while the lad read the codes, another one popped up. Anyone have any ideas what this means.

Code 17981 Left Engine Mount Solenoid Valve ( N144 ) Open Circuit P1573 Signal/No Communication.

Saal gobbledeegook to me.

Cheers :beerchug:
