Future RS4

Post by LittleSkull » Fri Mar 14, 2003 6:42 pm

People were mentioning that Audi will be eliminating the turbos from their future cars (so no more twinturbo RS4), but if this is true why is the future RS3 going to be a twinturbo 350hp monster? Maybe this means that we can be looking forward to a 500hp TWINTURBO RS4 in the near future? Audi boys, if you're reading this, please make us a new toy to play with

The way I've been reading the press reports is that :

'S' cars will be normally aspirated
'RS' cars will be twin versions of 'S'car

So the RS4 should be the same as the RS6, with the RS6 moving onto a twin turbo V10 in the next generation

I heard the same thing as Dave, that the RS will be a twin turbo version of the S car. So based on the current S4 having the 4.2 V8, we should basically get the RS6 engine in the next RS4. However, I have heard somebody say that with SL55's and such like having 500hp, and the current horsepower craze, Audi were contemplating tuning the RS6 engine further, to about 500hp. Probably absolute tosh, but still, sounds like a nice thought to me! My only worry is that they'll try and put an autobox on it, and WHAT is the point in an RS with an auto?! Is it not a drivers' car?! That said I've heard the RS6 is a BEAST with that gearbox. Still, the control of a manual is nice. Just a thought though, what the hell would a clutch feel like for an engine like that?! The current RS4 clutch isn't exactly like squashing grapes Oooh 500hp in an RS4. Ooooooh there's something to dream about

I think it may well be a new S4 with two turbo`s!
And there might be a possibility that Audi will go all out on the bhp to compete with the likes E55 AMG etc.....
who knows, its too early to tell

Trouble is the E55 is more of an RS6 competitor, just because of the size really, and the cost. How much is one of those bad boys nowadays? I remember the old 340ish hp ones, before the superchargers, and they were fast! CHRIST knows what i must be like now! Actually, there's a point, does the new E55 have the supercharged 500hp engine? It might not now I think about it Oooh but if it does. PHWOAR what a noise, and the power isn't exactly lacking either. Only trouble is, we're starting to run out of ways to physically get a car moving faster! Any more power'll just slow the bugger down!

A thread on AudiWorld recently indicated Len Hunt (head of Audi of America) told people in the Audi corral at Sebring the B6 RS4 would *not* have the RS6 engine. Rather, it will be equipped with a twin-turbo V6 with output near 450 hp, a price of $65k (USD) and be introduced about a year from September (US schedule).

So we'd get a the new slab sided shape with no more power than a chipped old shape?

Add on better brakes, suspension and just confirms my intention to keep it (finances permitting of course )

There is no way the current RS6 engine can fit in the S4 making it an RS4. There is simply no space for it and unless Audi can change the laws of physics it just ain't gonna happen.

No they can't get the RS6 engine in there. However they got a V8 into the new S4 by modifying it. If they do some bodywork mods (as they did for the RS4 - not sure about the RS6?), then I have no doubt that they could put turbos on it. The problem will then be with heat...

As for the US, don't forget that the US cars are often toned-down versions of the Euro models. The US doesn't get the A3 at all, so if they get the new A3, they may not get the S3 or RS3. The talk of a V6 biturbo for the new US S4 has been around for ages. I could easily see Audi making a V8 biturbo RS4 for Europe and a V6 biturbo RS4 for the US.

Next-gen A3 is coming, as is the S3 with rumors we'll get the RS3 too.

As for power ratings ... there is less and less disparity between Europe and the US any more, with many differences explained away by how horsepower is reported (SAE, net, etc). Emissions only robs us of a few hp, but as European emission standards get tougher even that has become a moot point.

And FWIW ... I don't see them building a limited number car with two engine choices based on market, just doesn't make economic sense. Whatever Europe gets ... we'll get.

Are you serious? Not likely what so ever in my opinion.

I think the RS6 engine could be squeezed into the S4 engine bay with a few modifications. Sure, it's a big motor, but then the 4.2 does fit in the S4 with only minor mods. And as has alreayd been said, the current RS4 isn't exactly standard up front! It's possible they could extend the bonnet as well, as I've heard of the normal, bigger 4.2 V8 being pushed into the old A4's if you personally order it from Audi. It costs a few bob, but a mate of mine from my old rich kid school, his old man had one. I only saw it once, and it did look a little longer in the nose, but it certainly sounded like the V8, so I think it was all true. Must be pretty rare. Anyone else heard of this happening? Anyway, the RS6 engine in the S4. The intercoolers could be mounted off the the sides as in the RS4 now, and with a built out front faring I think it could fit quite nicely. I've only sat in front of a new shape A4 and thought about where bits would go, as opposed to actually opening it up and having a go, but I think it could be done. Oooh but if it did What a beast.

Come on Audi, get building us some protoypes :24430-audibash: Sorry, I just really wanted to use the new graemlins
