Stinkin' washer fluid reservoir

Post by Pete.S » Thu Apr 28, 2005 2:53 pm

Anyone else had problems with their washer fluid smelling like cats' piss?? Had it on the B5, now on my B6, I'm guessing it's some sort of chemical reaction between the stuff Audi use at service with the Halfords stuff I bung in there as top up, or could it be when the car has been used heavily (hence warm engine) = heating the reservoir + contents and producing a smell that means I haven't been the first choice for taxi services recently

I only ever use the Audi stuff which spells pleasant enough. It's cheap so can't see the point in risking blocking the fan spray heads. :?

Never had a problem with it smelling badly...and I use the halfords stuff in combination with the Audi stuff.

Perhaps someone's having a laugh ?

Exactly what I thought when it first happened on the B5, but there's no way anyone can of gotten under the bonnet, and the smell's definitely emanating from the reservoir (not on the spray heads, ruling out someone smearing something there). Most strange..... :?

Anyone drained the res. from the bottom on a B6? Audi did that to cure the B5, but I seem to remember them saying it was a pig of a job.

Could you not use the jets to empty most of the fluid...then put some fresh stuff in and start from scratch ? - even run pure water through the jets for a while ??

Tried that Dave, I've run the res. dry 3 times, filling up with pure water each time, there must be some sort of yucky sediment stuck right at the bottom that the washer motor won't power out, hence why Audi had to remove the motor (I'm presuming the outlet from the res. is somewhere near the bottom of it) and flush it out. I might try emptying the bottle, then squirting a pressure washer into the filler neck, see if that'll dislodge the dead cat!
