Screw it!

Post by kmpowell » Mon May 25, 2015 6:27 pm

Had a trip out today and on the way back around the M25 my missus (who has ears and eyes like a hawk) mentioned she thought there was a funny noise coming from the rear left. The noise went, the car felt ok and the TPMS wasn't flagging any problem, so we carried on home. But when washing it tonight I found this...

Given the car is only 1600miles old I don't really fancy replacing all four with better tyres just yet, so has anybody recently bought a P-Zero for a good price, if so, from where?

TIA

I had the same problem last year and with around the same mileage.
My local dealer said given the mileage it would be alright to put on a new one as there was only minimal wear on the other 3.

It may not have gone in all the way, pull it out and see. However once you've removed it, you're fairly committed to replacing it so will need another car in the meantime. I think you'll be ok looking at it.

If you need one, I still have a Pzero in my garage with about 4-5mm on it that I've been keeping as a spare that I'd let go for not much
Pretty sure you can't plug a tyre that close to the side wall

Had same thing happen, but luckily near end of tyre life.

Managed to keep going for a week or so just pumping up occasionally.

When was preparing for whole new set of tyres and waiting for them to arrive I went to tyre dealer who said "near sidewall we can't plug it - we'll pump up to 50 psi which should last the weekend till you bring in for new tyres"

On the Monday morning it's dead flat ... So got out my motorbike plugging kit. It worked.

I since bought 2 other styles to give me options but think this is the better sort and it's fine near the sidewall as it uses a different system to what the tyre guys use. I now keep them in the boot for emergencies:

I'd recommend getting some even if just to know you can get to the tyre place for a new tyre

Cheers

Thats a PITA on a brand new tyre but the screw looks like its quite far out, hopefully it hasn't gone all the way through.
Good luck.

Cheers all, it's a PITA, but I'm counting myself lucky because I drove 100miles on it fully loaded with the dog, missus, 18month old in situ. :shock:

Thanks for the offer, very much appreciated. :thumb: I've managed to source a new one for £200 fitted at my home, so I'll go with that for convenience' sake.

Quick question, I see there are two PZeros available, one is a 'Corsa', one isn't. Does anybody know which one is fitted to B8s?

What are your other tyres as there are 4 performance versions of the Pirellis P Zero's. A lot of people go for the ones with a name attached like Nero, Corsa or Rosso. These are actually all rated for less grip in either the dry, the wet or both over just the P Zero. Probably worth matching the rest when getting a replacement for consistency.

There's no mention of the word Corsa on them, so I'm assuming I have regular P-Zero.

That confirms my suspicions then. The guy from National turned up this morning with a Corsa, but when I queried it he was adamant that it was the same as what was on there already, despite the others not having Corsa written on them.

I showed him the two types on the Pirelli website, so he went away to rebook and get a non Corsa version.

I'm pretty sure that the OE ones should be coded "R01" for RS cars.

R01 just means environmentally friendly, put the info below. Quite funny on a V8.

"High Mileage which places R:01 at the top of its regional category with an average yield value 30% higher than the previous product;
high retreading value, thanks to the new belt structure which, together with the SATT technology, improves the performance levels in terms of mileage during the first life of the tyre and optimises retreading during subsequent stages;
reduced rolling resistance, with benefits leading to reduced fuelling and harmful emissions and to annual fuel savings estimated at around 3%;
low noise level, and use of ecological materials, without use of highly aromatic oils (HAOF), two specifications which already meet European laws which come into effect in 2010 and 2012."

My understanding is that RO1 tyres have been specifically designed by the specific manufacturer, whether than be Pirelli or Michelin or whoever, for Audi GmbH vehicles, such as RS models and the R8 for example. Tyres for Mercedes have MO1 and BMW /Mini have an asterisk (*). Apparantly, these tyres are no better or worse than the equivalent standard tyre; the only difference is that these tyres have been specifically designed for the performance characteristics of each particular model. AO markings are for Audi cars too, but not RS models.
I did quite a bit of delving into this when I put a brand new set of alloys and tyres on my B7 several years ago. I don't know about the 'environmentally friendly' and especially the retreading aspect; that doesn't seem logical to me....but that's just my thoughts.....

It's the same tread pattern as the moulds carry over, but the manufacturer will tune the material compound used to alter NVH, grip, wear and rolling resistance to suit the customer - ie Audi
