I expect the initial oil (which will contain the shards and filings that naturally flake from a new engine) is then changed in the audi engine before you receive your car.

M engines are not pre-run in and therefore the oil needs changing in the run-in service.

The advice for run-in for the RS 6 relates to the broader drivechain, brakes, suspension etc.
That sounds like a logical explanation :beerchug:

This burning oil smell/issue isn't going away!!! It's booked in tomorrow we'll see what that brings.

Was measuring some things today using VCDS and can confirm that although the dash WATER temperature indicator showed 90degc, the actual water temperature was only at 75 (all be it increasing) while the oil temperature in the DIS was still showing --- . As the oil came up to approx 90degc the water was then also indicating around the 90deg mark both on dash indicator and on VCDS. I guess it is the case that VCDS and the indicator in the dash are getting their temperatures from different places in the cooling circuits however it goes to show that Oil temperature is a more reliable indication of when it is safer [for the engine :nodder: ] to put the foot down.

That's interesting to know regarding the temps.

I've been leaving the driver display on the lap timing screen. as soon as the oil is showing up to temp on there then for a bit of fun.

feeltheburn andbamf, second guessed a point I was going to make and that is,if the oil temp is so important why have they hidden it away in the lap timer. However I am going with what feeltheburn said in his earlier post and making sure that the oil is upto temp and yes don't laugh I'm still taking it easy on the revs, not long now though and I have convinced myself it's getting faster and faster,at times totally scary.also oil usage,I've used nothing and done 2500 miles, what do others say about oil used, does it eventually start eating it up
or it stays good.

Just on the subject of oil temp again, every car must be different.today kept a close eye on the oil, water temp quickly rose to 90 deg,oil temp zero,in a blink of an eye then hit
68 deg but then took at least 10 mins to hit 90/95 digs,so a reverse of what feeltheburn found out. all I'm saying is don't go by water temp alone because on mine that wouldn't work, all your advice is brill, keep it coming.

I just watched Audi Mega Factories on TV. It's based on the R8 but I would expect the rs6 to have the same procedure. The engine is put on a test bed and once upto temp it's then run at 8500 RPM for 15 minutes, exhaust manifold red hot!!! No guarantee but I would expect after that treatment you would be good to go when u pick up the beast!!! Can't wait!! Build week starting tomorrow!!

Aren't M cars filled with a running in oil when new and then changed to a normal oil after 1200 miles. They also change the diff oil as well as engine and gearbox oils at this mileage.

Allegedly yes. I have an M3 and the dealer says that the oil is the same though they just change it.

10biscuits, what you have seen regarding your car is the same as I saw, our cars are behaving in the same way  The water temp on my dash showed 90degc fairly rapidly, the temperature via VCDS was lower though and took longer to rise to +90degc. The oil temperature reads --- until around the 68degc point. It doesn't suddenly rise to +60, it just doesn't display the temperature until it increased to +60 [--- does not mean zero]. So if you are like me and like to wait until things are warmed up before sinking the boot :boots: then better to rely on the oil temperature than either the water temperature or the point when the initial rev limit shown around the rev counter return to normal.

thanks feeltburn, great stuff,I also noticed that at the same time as the oil temp hit 68 the leds on the rev display jumped from about 5300 to 6500,do you think it's therefore
safe to go by the rev display, cos I don't always want to drive with the lap timer display on.

I wait until the oil is up to around 90degc before I give it any real throttle...this is a personal decision as I feel that given the oil ultimately settles at around 90degc this must be the optimum temperature. I guess Audi have done their sums and determined that the oil is good from 68degc given the initial rev limit is also removed at this point? My view is that this is done more to waylay any criticism from owners frustrated at having to wait 5 miles or so to get the full use of what they paid for rather than being a decision that is sympathetic to the engine.

But as Audi don't require an early service, it makes me think that they stick it on a dyno during production and that wears the honing pattern and seals the rings.

Maybe they don't - maybe they prefer non optimal run-in and more work for there dealership service departments later.

Does anyone know what they do ?

RS products generally have more delivery miles on them anyway, does anyone know why ?
