S4 @ 200 MPH

Post by viperbl » Sun Apr 10, 2005 9:09 pm

Hi Guys,

How stable do you think a 99 S4 would be at 200 MPH?

Has it ever been done???

It would have Bilstein PSS9 suspension and 18" RS4 replicas on it ...

LOL! RS4 brakes, but I suppose the doors could be put on hydraulics to open on braking ;)

Someone once told me that given the aerodynamics of an S4, you'd need nearly 700bhp to make a genuine 200mph. Lots of people in tuned rs4 see indicated 200's but there is a world of difference between 200 on the clock (probably nearer 190mph) and the magic 200mph for real.

That is very true, GPS and clock is two different worlds, but, slight advantae with the S4 over the RS4 in the lower drag coefficent and a little lighter ... I still think 200 MPH is out of reach right now, but I am hoping for close to 190, still, I would like to assume the car would stay stuck to the ground doing this speed

Couple of Stage 3 S4s in the US have got very close to 190Mph, try Bonneville search on AudiWorld. CaliAudiS4 is the guys handle I was thinking off. There is a high speed comp in the UK (VMAX??), I don't think an S4 has ever competed. Bruntingthorpe 2 mile straight is used IIRC.

In a recent issue of evo (the one where the tuned 9ff Porshce reaches 240mph at Nardo - i think) they show a breif equation to show how much more power is needed for a higher top speed. If you know current power and current top speed, you should be able to work out the drag coeffiecient, and it should be simple to work out the power needed to reach 200mph.

Had a look for it the other day (for a different reason) and couldn't find it. ANyone else have it?

This is serious stuff. I think the S4 (and RS4?) will run out of revs in top to reach a genuine 200mph. Michell (of Revo) tried it inan RS4 that Dialynx prepared and they had to change the gearbox to a 2.5tdi. Don't think he actually did it either. Stability will be a huge issue too!

Yes, I think that magic 200 might just be out of reach unless some series testing and mods are done ... If Dialynx have difficulty making one! well!

Good footage of VMAX on 5th gear just there ... GT2 Ruf did the business there :)

Wasn't a sort of pinky color was it with a white spot on the side with 9ff written inside it? If so, I have footage of it here blasting past me last year around the ring

No he didnt, no where near. fastest audi to be speed trapped at bruntingthorpe that i know of was andiroo's at 182

190mph max, even if you had 1000bhp (Ok, so i wasn't banking on you buying concordes nose cone as part of your mods)

I have had 175 out of the S4 when it was 363 bhp and 414 ftlb torque, it should be 450 bhp and maybe a little more torque, so I am thinking a few more MPH out of from this.

Problem is the length of runway I think, the last few MPH come slowely! maybe a visit to Germany is in order :D

PS. It was red I think, can't remember if it had anything on the side

In Germany, I have driven the 'narrow' S4 body (as opposed to the 'wide' RS4 body) at a little over 180mph. It was perfectly stable through a series of down hill bends at this speed, but the revs were in the old factory red zone, so not much headroom. I have had problems with stability in other A/S4 models which have sunroofs. They can get sucked out at speed (especially if you fiddle with the controls, as I learnt), this can cause separation of the airflow, which is not a good thing, from a stability point of view, but great for the person who does your laundry. It does take a long road to get up to this speed.

Serves you right for feckin about with the sunroof at 180 rather than looking where your're going....

Watch 5th gear. They are doing a section last night on trying to get a car (non ultra high performance) to breach 200mph. They have gone for a relatively std Lotus Esprit V8 with approx 450bhp. It'll be interesting to see what happens. The remaining part of that test will be completed later in the series.
