Solid ESP - Sorted

Post by markshepps » Mon Mar 30, 2015 5:13 pm

The 4 hasn't had much action in the last few weeks... Took her out for a run and ESP on solid after giving the beans... Clears when restart, but on again after some spirited driving (car performs fine).
What do we think? MAF? I've read that could be a culprit... Haven't had time to run VCDS on her yet... Ordered some MAF cleaner though... Worth a shot.

Are you talking about the EPC by any chance opposed to the ESP as in traction control with you referring to the MAF? Vaccume leak maybe if so? I took the valve out when I did a CAF and it got rid of the EPC light. It's prone to failure so I believe.

Hi Chris_m...It's the traction control light... Picture of Car with wiggly tyre tracks underneath :-)
Did a search and have seen a couple of references to the MAF triggering this along with EPC... Not sure why it would, or if that's actually a true statement, but thought given that's such a simple job I'd give that a go first.

Possible but could also be a wheel speed sensor or brake light switch, so you'd be better off hooking up VCDS and pulling any logged codes. Then post the results back up here. RS4 MAF's seem to be very very delicate, so I wouldn't mess around with it until you were sure that's the cause of your problem.

Yes, that's where I'd start looking. It shouldn't be that expensive £15-£25

Why are there so many other error codes? I also have this in my Vag logs... but no error codes on the dash....

Last time I ran VCDS was in Nov of 2014, and I didn't clear the codes, so these have all been logged for some time with the exception of the brake light switch issue.
All works fine except for parking sensors which I've just never got around to sorting out... Some misfires logged, but only a few instances over quite a long period so not too worried about that.... Ordered new brake light switch so hopefully that'll sort the problem.

OK likely a stupid question, but is the switch on the left the brake light switch (both of these are next to the clutch pedal)?

Can't find any other likely candidates, but before pulling things about would like to check as I don't want to be breaking any clutch switches :biggrin2:

Just to close this out in case it's useful down the road.... I can confirm the switch on the far left is indeed the brake light switch.
Once changed the brake lights are operational and no more solid ESP on dash.

Thanks Surrey Sam for all the pointers and info!
