S4 MPG?
Re: S4 MPG?
there's quite a few threads on mpg, eg have a look at:mboy wrote:what can you get out of one on a run a about 80-85MPH?

I did some "tests" in non-hilly Holland and reckon 20-24 is about right. The BIG change comes when you exercise your right foot; steady motorway driving and it seems to stay sensible, but sometimes the 340hp V8 temptation becomes irresistible !!!
Personally I don't think you should buy this car if you're worried about petrol consumption. I'm not 'cos I don't do many miles; the guy who owned mine before me did 30000 miles in its 1st year. I'm not surprised he sold it on (lucky me

Re: S4 MPG?
There's two issues. One is cost. It'll cost over £100 a week in fuel. This may of may not be an issue. The second is that you'll be at a fuel pump virtually every other day.mboy wrote:Hi, I'm going to buy an s4 avant but I do about 500 miles a week so I'm bit worried about MPG, what can you get out of one on a run a about 80-85MPH?
The range is not great on these cars. At best you'll probably get 300.

Agreed^. I'm assuming the overtly modest tank size is to keep weight issues to a minimum, though struggling to drive from Hull to London without a fuel stop is a pain.
I've done 25k miles so far and have done plenty of my own MPG tests. Two quite interesting things I've found: one is that you'll see a much higher MPG return if you drive very gently while the engine is cold if you're embarking on a long cruise. It can bump the figure up from 23 to over 26. The other is that the weather really makes a big difference. Saturday night for instance, very still, calm conditions, returned 26.5 on a 200 mile m/way cruise @ 75 mph. When it's been windy I've had 22 for the same speed & distance.
Cruise control is invaluable if, like me, you do plenty of long hauls and hate handing Mr. Brown more than is necessary. I despise the low MPG of the car, but to drive across country on a variety of roads in UK weather, I really can't think of any other car I'd prefer to be in.

I range 17 to 27 depending on how I am driving - even got 30 mpg once! Average is 21,22 mpg so 275miles=fill up. The low fuel indicator in the DIS is very good and can be run down to a range of 10 or 15 miles - its amazing how far you can go if you lift off for the last couple of gallons.
I do 15k miles a year in ours and have just bought another so that my wife and I will have one each. The 2nd one will do 15k miles pa as well probably. I keep considering diesel but the 2.5 lump in the A4 sounds awful (not sure about the 3.0 litre) and once you've specced them up they cost £32-35k new. A one year old S4 is just as cheap.
I bought a second hand B6 as the B7 has seen the fuel tank cut from 66 to 63 litres. Not much I know but it really needs 80 litres for us chaps out in the sticks. That's why I'm going to be looking at the S6 next year.
Simple answer to your question - buy one!

if you are worried about fuel go for the diesel,my new 3.0 does 38-40 and now its been chipped it goes like stink in real world driving not a lot of difference from the qst tuned b6 s4 i had before if you are thinking of 300m to a tank dream on!!!! i never got above 260m EVER! of course you miss the v8 noise but there you go.....
I always feel there is perhaps 10 miles 'insurance'. I have never gone below 10 miles showing on the DIS and I don't remember ever getting more than 63/64 litres into the 66 litre tank. Compare that with a Merc I recently owned which regularly took 66 litres in a 62 litre tank with c20miles still showing on the range! I guess some manfacturers' include the volume of the filler neck and some don't.Pete.S wrote:@ Merlot - how accurate is the fuel range indicator on the DIS? Whenever mine's got to 50 miles range indicated & I've got 30 miles to go, I always brick it & fill her up!
