Rear Pads & Discs

Having bought a set of Audi Discs and Pads from VAG-Parts (great service) I was in two minds whether to fit them myself or get a garage to do it.....

Well, as I wasn't working today and it was sunny I decided I'd save a few quid and do it myself.

So I took the wheel off, naffed about with various bolts including having to disconnect the rear anti-role bar to get at one of them to eventualy be in the position to fit the new parts.

Now my experience of calipers etc really comes from Bikes so I assumed that all I would have to do is push the piston back so there was enough room for the new pads & disc......wrong !

As it turns out you need a special tool to turn and compress the piston at the same time. I eventually tracked one down at Halfords (not a perfect fit but for £20 & getting the job done can't complain).

I sure that everyone else knew about this [img]images/graemlins/smirk.gif[/img] but just in case you didn't....you do know.

It's well worth investing in one of these tools for rear brake pistons. For the fronts you just have to take the brake reservoir cap off, and you can do it by hand. Obviously the rears are further away from the reservoir, so that aint gonna work [img]images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

Apparently it has something to do with ABS & handbrake on the rear calipers. It turns out it's common on almost all road cars with ABS....

I felt like a complete prat sitting there waiting for my wife to come home so I could hijack her car and go to Halfords.

It's a good thing I didn't have a G-Clamp in the garage 'cos if you apply too much pressure you'll wreck the caliper....got to twist and squeaze baby.

The way to tell is if the piston has some form of indentation on it you probable have to twist ...if it is smoooooth then just pushing should do the trick.

Thanks for that ...its a while since I had rears like that and I too would have been reaching for a clamp..

I know the feeling Jeff.

The first time I replaced the rears I used a pair of pliers and a metal bar to try and get the piston to go back. And whoops, the pliers sliped and I tore the rubber boot around the piston. [img]images/graemlins/062802beat_prv.gif[/img] Fortunately there is a service kit but I had to remove and dismantle the caliper after waiting for the kit to arrive. What a prat I felt [img]images/graemlins/062802beat_prv.gif[/img]- almost called Audi to come and tow me in but I managed to replace the boot [img]images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]. After struggling the last time I fitted the rear pads on my car and my wifes (it can be done with pliers and a lever but is is very tricky)I came across the tool in Halfords.
