I was also considering a 330ci before I finally decide on an S4 Avant. My decision was based on the following:

1. with 2 kids, the S4 is much more practical
2. S4 is quicker
3. 3 series coupes are common and all look more or less the same
4. BMW drivers tend to get a bad rep (deserved or not?)
5. I really like the stealth factor of the fast estate car!

But then, insurance wasn't a problem for me - I'm 34, plus I previously drove an Impreza Turbo which isn't exactly cheap to insure

cheers,
Andy

I like the fact I can now leave my car in reasonably sensible places and find it still there and unmarked when I get back. With some of my other cars I just couldn't leave them anywhere!!

On the road too... you often don't get idiots trying it on everywhere...

So in summary I like the stealth like abilities and image the S4 delivers...

Saying all this ...I may eat my words as I am looking into a twin twin exhaust conversion!!!

Hi Andy,

I also considered a 330d estate before I bought the S4. Quick car, very tuneable (circa 245 bhp - for a diesel, that's not too bad). If you've got kids and you need to put the seat back to get a good driving position, the BM has loads more leg room in the back than the Audi - it's awful!

You should be able to get a 1999.5 facelifted model for £17k or so. The differences aren't huge: redesigned centre console, headlight assembly now 1 piece instead of 2, different door handles, washer jets now hidden. I think that was about it.

Yes the facelift model came in April 1999. Mine was one of the first, and it was a T reg.

Servicing interval is 10,000 miles.

Rough costs are:

10,000 £ 150
20,000 £ 220
30,000 £ 150
40,000 £ 400

The belts are done at 80,000 so this is a £ 700 service.

David

I have an 80,000 coming up in Scotland - Audi quoted me £200 for service + £250 for timing belts - is this a very good deal then ?
Well, it's a smashing car

I would say it is too good to be true.

Worth checking with them to make sure it's the right service.
