RS2 Transformed!

Post by GlynRS2 » Sat Mar 12, 2005 8:44 pm

I have just got back from having my car tuned by the guys at MRC Developments.
The difference is amazing - there is so much torque lower down and the pick up from about 3000rpm is electric.
Over the years I have used most of the big names in chip tuning on my various cars but none of them come close to MRC. Doing the chip on the road so you have proper airflow throgh the intercooler and rads is just so much better. You also know exactly what you are getting and not just waiting to be pleasantly surprised on the way home. Would not recommend anyone else - as I am sure Pete, Alistair and Angus will confirm.
This is the link for the MRC website if you are interested.
Having the car put on the rolling road tomorrow, so should be able to give you the figures then. Just got a drive down to Bristol first to get there - I can't wait. :jump:

Absolutely. Mine's been remapped by MRC this week too. And like Glyn said the difference is truly amazing. I wouldn't recommend anyone else. I haven't used any of the other Audi tuning "specialists" so can't really comment on their service, but this has to be the best option getting it custom mapped real time with you in the drivers seat.

The results are in:
First run got to 258bhp at 6100rpm, but torque plot badly hampered by wheelspin.
Second run got 247bhp at 5706rpm and 366 ft/lb torque. Power hampered by the heat soak after the first run.
The torque hits a peak at 3100rpm but curve pretty flat from 3000 - 5500rpm.

Not bad on a standard exhaust and cats.
And do you ever feel it on the road.
Pete I would imagine that yours will be pretty much the same, as Mihnea said they were getting much the same while he was writing the chips. It will be interesting to see what you get when you go back to that local rolling road as the Interpro one was not great.
Anyway well pleased and very impressed with MRC.

I guess that should be 358 & 347bhp Glyn ?

Yes it sounds like most people had lower than expected figures on the day. As soon as I get my diff/gearbox oil leak fixed I'll be taking it back to my local RR.

I ended up with:

361bhp @ 6293rpm
377ft/lb Torque @ 3750rpm

1.9 peak boost @ 3600rpm-ish, 1.2 at redline.

I too had problems with wheel spin on the RR on first run resulting in smoke coming from my rear nearside tyre. The second run was ok but resulted in a bit of heat soak which clipped the potential bhp. The heat soak kicked in around 5200rpm-ish when the bhp suddenly dropped down a bit, leveled off and then started to climb again until 6293rpm at which point the operater called it a day and took his foot off the gas. The dynoplot suggests there was a little more to come and on the road I know it keeps pulling to redline. The run was done in 5th gear the MRC boys said it should have been done in 4th.

I am not convinced by Interpro's set up, not that I have much experience in these matters, but the cooling system didn't seem too efficient and I still think there was a bit of wheel spin going on on my second run, there are also gaps in the plot due to the car not being strapped down tightly enough. Nevertheless I am still happy with the pub figures and even happier with the way the car goes!

I just dug up my old figures from when AMD did the car in 1999 which are as follows:

374bhp @ 5156rpm
297ft/lb Torque @ 4637rpm

As a reminder stock is:

315bhp @ 6500rpm
302ft/lb Torque @ 3000rpm

So although my car is a bit more sluggish at the bottom end than stock mostly due to my bigger turbo's bigger lag and the 7A/Dialynx cams, things really pick up over 3600rpm and just keep going. But it is now diffenetly quicker and smoother than the AMD map. Mihnea's remap has really helped the car throughout the range and that extra 80ft/lb Torque really helps, especially at the bottom end. It is soooo much better than before!

Here is my plot from the second run:

As you can see there are gaps in the plot due to wheelspin still.
Also whereas the peak power was at 6100rpm on the first run (should be at about 6500rpm) it is much lower on this run due to the heat soak. Obviously this is not an issue on the road.

I suspect we should be organising to get the cars together at MRC when they have the RR setup. How about a day out with the RS2s ? If we speak nicely to the guys we might even get a discount, after all none of them are from Yorkshire so they may consider less brass !!!!!!!!!!!!

My MRC (R)S2 coupe was Dyno'ed by a very conservative Bosch Inertia Dyno at an altitude of 1600m with 102Octane.
It made 189KW@4500 and 422Nm@4000rpm on the wheels. Heat soak is also a major factor as can be seen by the graph. :D
It would probably make about 5% more at sea level and one can correct these figures by about 25% to get Engine Power.
Which will mean 250KW(330HP) and 550Nm :D
A brand new M46 M3 with chip did about 180kw on the wheels, so I believe these figures are very understated. 8)

Here is a Graph of my Dyno Run in 4th.
