RS6 reasonable price

Post by RichB888 » Fri Dec 12, 2014 3:30 pm

Firstly hello everyone as this is my first post.

Ive been researching the RS6 for a while now, read about the expected running costs e.t.c.

Ive found one for sale, a rather special one that I'd like to buy (which im sure many will know). Its the silver one Nick Mason originally owned, number 428, I can see one of its previous owners is registered on here too.

My question is not really the usual one of what to look for (as its already more than covered on topics ive read on here) but the asking price of this particular car.

Its £18k. I know typical prices are £7k - £12k. The history on 428 RS6 is rather good though, its had all the required work done, importantly quite recently too. Milage is still under 50k as well.

Would I be mad to pay anything close to £18k for it?

In my mind I think its actually reasonable given the very recent and significant money thats been spent on it, factor in the low milage and its celebrity past and I can understand the asking price. There are even a couple of higher milage examples up for sale at the moment with even higher asking prices.
Its just had cam belt, tensioners, tyres, brakes e.t.c and a recent torque convertor.

But is £6k over the going rate just too much still, even with all the recent work? What do people think?

Thanks

I believe FON is the appropriate greeting.

I agree very nice car. At that price my only issues are the rusty roof channels ,I don't understand why they haven't dealt with those especially as I believe Audi may well chip in for the repair. Also the torque converter replacement, not my specialist subject but I was concerned that if the TC had given up was the gearbox ok.
There are others on the forum who will be able to say whether this is a legitimate concern.
That aside as per comments in other posts recently it's about the going rate for a plus

Well going off of my own experience, I've sunk over £5K already on the car (but then again, it had been off the road for a couple of years) and that's just engine stuff (oil cooler, rad, water pump, alternator, cam belt kit, full engine & GB service) and full brakes - the car is shockingly expensive to maintain properly. On top of that, I've yet to do the turbos!

Coming from an Audi S8 V10 (2008), i thought it would be similar, found out the hard way that it's not in the least bit similar, everything is ridiculously expensive. I've been waiting for the car to be completely repaired for around 3/4 months now.

That's another factor, time and effort it takes to get the car up to scratch. I've taken a couple of days off from work here and there, spent hours searching/sourcing god knows how many parts. I honestly wish I had just bought a well maintained example now but my experience is extreme, since the car hadn't be used in years.

Once I get it back though, it will be like brand new! Only thing remaining is to ditch the DRC! On a sad note, I may not be able to keep it because of how much money I've had to put in to it.

I'd definitely look to get an RS6 that's had it's gearbox changed recently or at least properly serviced throughout it's life as I think this is one of the most expensive bits on the car and it's not uncommon for them to develop issues (mine was changed on my car at 35k miles, 2nd year of it's life!)

Hi Pete, thanks for the customary FON welcome.

Did you take a look at this one yourself then? Im not aware of rusty roof channels, I'm viewing it next week. The advert only mentions "slight corrosion to the roof rails".
Preston Auto Transmissions did the TC last year, I guess I could ring them to see if they recall whether they recommended any gearbox work as well?

Pop-pop-bang: id read its usually the TC thats the issue with most transmission failures on these cars? I would assume this is the original box on this one. I already asked the seller the question and theres no history of it being replaced.

Just re read the advert I thought it said roof channels which is a common problem. I see it actually says rails so perhaps it's not what I thought . Not sure what the rails are made of. I haven't been and looked at it I'm just keeping an eye out for a plus .
As PPB says in his post the gearbox is the main area of concern so I would want to be sure it was okay . As I said I don't know if it's reasonable to expect theTC to fail without detriment to the gearbox.
The celebrity ownership thing doesn't add any value for me just another owner.
Good luck hope you find the right car ,lots of pleasure in ownership along with inevitable financial pain.

I think you've answered your own question there. Surely its worth whatever you are willing to pay for it after viewing . I bought mine at quite a bit more than average price, but having viewed several before it, when I saw it in the flesh and went for a spin in it, viewed all the documents in detail and had a very lengthy conversation with the previous owner who was fanatical about the car, I knew it was worth spending a bit over the odds.

Good luck with the viewing. Let us know how you get on. :thumb:

The very cheapest C6 RS6 V10's are now around 25K.

If i was considering paying 18K for a C5 i would find the extra money for the C6.

In the long run it will cost you less, give you less headaches,no worries about gearbox
and is a better car regardless of mileage.

I agree. Its a more reliable car, but can you live with the looks? (Serious danger of going off-topic here)

On the left a potential tip=top condition low miler C5 for £18K, OR, on the right a bargain basement, take a gamble C6 for for an extra £7K.

I did, and I still would take the C5 thanks.

I can see your logic about the C6, in fact theres a 700hp one nearby for sale @ £24k. Its not something i'll consider though unless I find an issue with the C5 I'm looking at on Thursday, the very limited numbers of the RS6 Plus C5 appeal to me. Fragile, but special.

The C6 is suffering from middle child syndrome now... C5 is the daddy of them all, and the C7 is all fresh and new.
