Bizarre Shriek

Post by audiacious » Tue Dec 09, 2014 11:09 pm

An unfortunate squeal developed this evening. It is the first time I've heard anything like it outside the sooty and sweep show.
I'm hoping that someone may know what it is and whether it is potentially destructive to drive 20 miles to my usual mechanic.
It only comes on when on boost. Never below 2K. Power is down. It first occurred when planting it in 1st. The sound appears mainly to the drivers side.

Incidentally, I had a service yesterday with new air filters. I'm hoping the problem is not due to debris being sucked in and hosing the vanes of the snail.
It was working perfectly until this evening and has done appx 40 miles since the service, with a reasonable amount at full throttle.

Apologies, the videos are not Kubrick quality.

Are you still getting normal boost ( same as before the new filters) ? or is the car noticeably slower at boost range ?

to me it sounds like a pipe is off a turbo( cold side if the exhaust is not blowing)and you can hear the turbines slowing down , but I'm no expert. Bit hard to hear the rest of the engine in the video though Stanley .

Thanks for the response.
It's noticeably slower in boost. But it was normal in the 40 or so miles before the incident.
It is stage II and I sourced standard filters for it. I hope it hasn't gone and inhaled them....

Possibly blown a pipe off an intercooler if nothing else is obvious in daylight

I have had it looked at. Blown turbo.

Now I need to work out my options:
Replace one or both of the turbos with stock parts.
Replace both turbos with fancier ones.
Choose an option from above and do a prophylactic gearbox swap, whilst I'm at it, and keep forever because of the huge cost involved.
Chop it in for something else.
Leave it overnight in Liverpool.

I was going to suggest it  sorry to hear about the turbo.

Chances are if one has failed the other one won't be that far off unless something really has fallen down and knackered it.

Standard turbos do last quite a while. Depends if you wanna keep it stock or push for some more power etc..

Yeah, I was crossing my fingers for you, but it did sound a little like the impeller wheel hitting the case. :(

Maybe it's just a case of worn bearings, so a rebuild will be quite cheap relatively speaking....

Alternatively, stop worrying about the autobox and do a manual conversion with a pair of Garrett GT3071's :)

Hmm. That sounds costly.
I spoke to a gearbox place today who have done many RS6s, they can do a box refurb for £2600 all in. That involves taking out the turbos anyhow so the labour is already covered.
I can get a pair of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-A6-C5-RS ... 54145b7c83 for just over £500.
So it's not looking too hideous.

Are you sure?

£500 for a pair of turbos sounds way too cheap to me. Alarm bells are ringing!!!!

There have been plenty of discussions on replacement turbo options if you do a search (I'm sure someone will be along in a minute with a link or two).
IIRC one of the better options was to have Loba rebuild the ones off your car. You will be 6less for a while obviously, but you will be getting quality units back, with a warranty and quite reasonably priced.
That's the way I would go if I was in your situation. Even if it meant laying her up for a while til Christmas is out of the way. Just my two penneth of course.

This is just a thought, probably wrong anyways. I'm wandering if the standard filters may have caused this if the car is stage 2 mapped. It's going to be trying to pull a lot more air through those tiny filters than a standard car, and because they're quite restrictive it may have been spinning the turbos up faster to build the same amount of boost.

Apologies if I'm talking bollocks

I want to say "apology accepted" because it would be funny, but being that I'm not positive that you're wrong, I wont!!

Apparently, the filters that came out looked standard. I'm not sure if non-standard ones look the same.
As for the Loba rebuild, does anyone know the approximate cost and time scale of getting that done? Their website is under maintenance until Jan it seems.

I've just had a quick look on this forum but can't find the threads. (I'm in work too so bit awkward). If you have time, and you are better at using the search function than me then you should find a lot of info on this subject in this section of the forum. Being as their site is down a quick call to Unit 20 (very friendly and helpful) will be all you will need to answer your questions and get updated prices. If you are darn sarf then MRC are your guys.
