Big figures being quoted

Post by simple1 » Wed Mar 09, 2005 8:40 am

I read that the new car has some serious figures, 0-60 in 4.8 secs, 420PS and 430nm at 5500 rpm, red line is an amazing 8250 rpm, especially from an FSi V8.
Has dynamic ride control and a sports button mounted on the steering wheel to give alternative throttle map under acceleration and uses the Dynamic Ride system from the RS6

A question.. If a car's max power output is at 5500rpm, why do they produce one than revs all the way round to 8250? Isn't this rev band just supurfulous once you go past 5500?

It depends on what the power AND torque charts look like.
The power curve could be nice & flat.
Also remember that you need to use more revs in one gear so when you change up you drop into the usable part of the rev range in the next gear.

So there you have it - max torque is at 5k5.

That looks nice: 2k to 4k strong, 4k to 5k5 stronger, then more from 5k5 on to 7k8

Have you got the factory chart for the B5 RS4 Phil so we can compare side by side ?
Looksa to me that the big difference here to the B5 RS4 is the torque below 3k, and the extra 1k revs at the top.

by those figures Max power output (420bhp) appears at 8000 ish revs, not 5500rpm. Max torque however is at at 5500 rpm. Am I right? I was confused by the statement 430nm AND 420bhp both appeared at 5500rpm. Leading me to think what goes on beyond 5500 must be 'dead revs'

Perhaps I'm being dumb - I'll stick to advertising.

I drive like a girl anyway.

I thought max torque was always at around 5500 rpm on any engine! isn't that where it crosses the bhp line?
M3 CSL - Silver Grey, a few options.

Thanks Phil.

Wow, look at those graphs. Flat as anything. You could eat your dinner off that table-top.
Something tells me they aren't real measured ones but predicted/interpolated :bigblink:

Still, it shows flat 440Nm torque from 2k5 to 5k8, which although flat is higher than the B7 right through the range.
It also shows the 278kw of the B5 is roughly the same for the B7 at the same revs, just the B7 carries on up to 7k8.

So, I conclude the B5 will have more usable power in the part of the revs where most of us drive (on the road anyway), but it will be close. I assume the mpg figures for the B7 RS4 are going to be equally as bad (or worse) than the B6 S4 ??

I guess not to healthy, although the car is slightly lighter in saloon form at 1631 kgs than the current RS, but 8 is always gonna swollow more than 6, I can never get more than 20 out of the merc although it is forced induction and individual injectors.... and it is 1500cc larger than Audi  Merc also is more bulky at 1923 kgs :biggrin2: Performance figures are very similar even though the merc is pumping out 476 bhp through the back wheels
