Giff Gaff SIM for Audi Connect/Google Maps

Post by moonigan » Mon Nov 10, 2014 4:10 pm

Has anyone managed to get a PAYG Giff Gaff SIM working in the SIM slot in the dash. I purchased a £5 data bundle just to see how everything works and when I put the SIM in the dash the car identified it and asked me which SIM to use for data and which to use for calls. However whenever I try to use any data based services it complains about needing a data connection even though the car shows 3G connectivity.

I've tried the SIM in a phone and it works a treat.

Cheers

Isn't that something to do with a Sim access profile? I'm no expert, but I think this has come up before.....
It's all torque talk.

BOOM! Thanks. I did a search but could find much but you pointed me in the right direction. The Giff Gaff SIM access profile is setup with O2 details by default. Changing these to the ones listed below does the job:

APN - Access Point Name: giffgaff.com
Login - Username: giffgaff
Password: [leave blank]

Not sure what others are using, but I got a 70 quid "Three" SIM which lasts for 12GB or 12 months, whichever comes sooner. Coverage seems fine and only used a couple of hundred MB in 1500 miles. The extra data may be useful for keeping music synced on a paired iPod, or something.

I'm not entirely convinced how useful the Google maps imagery is, but the traffic info seems very good. Helga (as I call her) nearly gave me heart failure last week when she suddenly yelled "Caution, vehicle on fire" whilst I was bombing down the M4. Turns out that she was warning me of a burning truck a couple of junctions away.

I use an EE SIM card which I think is a fiver a month, and it is linked to my mobile account so it just shares the data bundle from my phone.

2014 B8 Audi RS4
2013 BMW 330d xDrive, lasted 10 months, worst car ever!

EE do an unlimited 6 month data bundle for 20 quid.
