I believe a few on here have these....are the nitpghtmare stories I hear re running costs etc true?

Nope just the same as any other high performance car

More reliability of the pre 2012 models, I had been almost on the edge of pulling the trigger on a 2011 model but too many issues and this comes from my old apprentice who is now a Nissan GT-R tech in Glasgow :

Headlamps misting up, inc brand new replacements
The good old circling issues in the box ( relatively cheap repair once the box is out )
The gearbox sometimes refusing point blank to engage gears
Bell housing bearing issues ( monumentally excessive backlash)
Steering column module failures
MFD control module failures ( 3k from Nissan )
Brake discs cracking
Poorly tuned engines going bang ( can happen to any engine but gtr seems prone due to some people chasing numbers )

Best bit of advice from him was to buy one with a warranty, but it speaks volumes when Nissan want a extra £8000 to extend the warranty of a late 2013 car !! .

I'd not read that much into the above as most of those are fairly rare other than the below.

The 2 that do crop up from time to time are bell housing & the MFD, both of which would be replaced under warranty & are not really that common, but as with any performance car defo better to get one with a warranty. I've also never heard of the extended warranty costing £8k. Can't say i've heard of any engines going bang either, but if folk are using bad tuners then kind of their own fault & hardly an issue with the car itself. Those with common sense use the 2 best known who are SVM & Lichfields & i've not heard of any of their cars & that includes the monsters going bang.

Yeh extended warranty is around 3k or litchfields offer one. Mines is a 2010 and it's been solid and tuned since the day I bought it

That sounds about right. No idea where he got the £8k figure from & as you say, SVM or Litchfield offer one too & that's cheaper still.

I too had a MY10 & had no mechanical issues at all (was an SVM 650R without downpipes). Only issue i had was getting through the consumables at a fair lick but i did used to track it & did several VMAX events so they did take their toll on brakes & tyres.

So the gearbox circlip issue is a rare one ? , I think not especially if the car has had a hard life and a lot of launches, again on the early models , Yes the kit to eliminate this is a well proven upgrade.

Bear in mind I was not talking about a brand new out the box car, more a pre 2012 model as its these things that put me off, and no it wasn't hear say it was direct from a trusted NHPC tech not the Internet techs.

And for your info the 8k extended warranty was from a Nissan NHPC on a 2013 gtr earlier on this year

I am not a gtr hater guys , I wanted one badly after cutting my teeth on R32 GTR s inc a nice rare R32 GTR Vspec 2 . Ok doesn't have the nice noise a RB makes on full chat but the VR sounds not too bad .

I was defo taken back when the Nissan salesman mention the cost of the extended warranty , it's just maybe one of those itches that won't get scratched , I have driven one down in the borders of Scotland and it was immense.

But our new facelift RS6 arrives next April so that will do the family wagon duties with GTR levels of grunt

The litchfield warranty is far superior than that of Nissan. For every problem you listed there's a fix. My point is that in two years in a 2010 with a few vmax's etc under my belt, mines hasn't failed on anything

I know of one failure & that wasn't a stock power car, so hardly an issue. It's a recommended upgrade when going North of 650bhp, which bearing in mind that's a 35% power increase on all pre MY11 cars is hardly a concern for your average GT-R owner. You also need new turbos when passing 650bhp but that doesnt mean the turbos are a weak item. It's well known that the R35 is a tuners dream, so when dragging such high gains from the engine, it's hardly a surprise that a few bits need to be strengthened.

I'll call Middlehurst tomorrow to check that price but either you misheard or whoever gave you that figure of £8k was pulling your tail. Unless it's some new lifetime warranty offering.

Final point, no car is bullet proof so if you find one that's had a very hard life & been condemned to pissing contests with continuous hard launches, then yes I'd be expecting problems, but that would apply to virtually any car.

My old GT-R has done I reckon a couple of thousand track miles (40k miles in total) & several VMAX's, it's had a few handling & power enhancements & has been out of warranty for over a year, but no mechanical faults in over 4yrs.

Nobody is saying you are, but don't believe everything you hear, even if the source appears knowledgable.

The cars are solid & epic at what they do. A few issues exist as they do in any car, but nothing major & nothing a warranty wouldn't resolve. The £8k extended warranty is pure B/S & I'd suggest asking that question on the gtr forum as although they're not cheap they're nowhere near that kind of money (unless something freaky has happened in the last few days).

As said above, better warranties at lower prices are also available. Don't take what NHPC dealers say for granted as they're often way off the mark (I'm afraid). No different to Audi or BMW dealers really :beerchug:

Hey w8pmc that was from one of the Nissan NHPC salesmen in Glasgow , pretty sure if memory serves me right it was £7900 for two years and £5000 for one.will see if I can find the email

I'm going to have to at least eat the brim of my hat as the Official Nissan Extended Warranty costs are not as far from the prices you quote as i thought, however when viewed in context an extended warranty from SVM or Litchfields is £1k per annum & even Middlehurst offer a warranty at £1500 so god only knows what Nissan are thinking with their pricing. Warranty Direct i believe is about £800.

Having a flick through gtr.co.uk it appears most unsurprisingly have opted for Litchfield/SVM warranties.

1 year total mileage 60,000 £2658.00

2 year total mileage 100,000 £6558.00

Although i can't be 100% sure, most RS's extended warranty costs from Audi were around £1200-1500 per annum so no different to the cost for the R35 if you laugh off Nissan's attempt.

Two years extended warranty on the RS6 is £1335 if you select it when you spec the car , but I am going to ask the dealer how much extra to do it once I get the car
