Keys and alarm fob apparently washed down the drain!

Post by AdrianD » Sun Nov 02, 2014 11:26 pm

So if you was in this position where a reputable independant dealer apparently washed your keys and alarm fob down the drain after leaving them on the sunroof while it was being jet washed what would you do?
Would you be happy with the lost key and alarm fob replacement offer or would you be concerned about the security of your RS and demand a complete set of locks and alarm reprogrammed?

Id be tempted to have a chat with your insurer, and see what they will accept, as it will be them you come back to if it disappears in a month.

Or, have the garage retieve the keys/contact the waterboard etc so they can be accounted for and destroyed.
A camera survey of the drain might locate them, or they could be in a gully pit, where solids fall, and the water carries over, they might not have gone that far.

They tell me that they have an industrial waste system and there's no chance of recovery of the keys...

Hi Adrian, no advice other than what's already been said, but I'm interested to know which garage. Was it near Truro by any chance?

Is there any CCTV? Sounds fishy that they'd leave the keys on the roof and then start jet washing without seeing them. If it didn't happen then chances are someone pocketed the keys.

They have point blank refused to cover anything beyond the replacement alarm fob and key...

I'd be calling them assholes for putting keys on the roof in the first place. Contact the police and see what they say.

If they make you new keys then the old key won't start the car anymore at least. I would ask them to immediately remove the key they have lost from the car and make a new key while you decide what to do.

Reason being security and if you lost the key you now have it would be an expensive problem with only one key.

Yes the issue is only with the lost key being able to unlock the doors boot but it won't deactivate the alarm or start the car once you programme it out. I'd suggest doing this immediately rather than waiting until you have a new key / change locks.

So after speaking to Audi changing the entire set of locks isn't 100% straight forward as it effectively changes the entire identity of the car... They recommended just replacing the key and reprogramming the old key out... yes they can still enter the car physically with the key but then again they can do that by smashing a window i suppose... :(

The alarm will go off if someone enters it too so I guess it's ok.

Bit of a PITA :/
