After discovering Marcus at discskimmers.com through his work on B7 RS4s on this forum I thought it only right that I continue to spread the word - this guy is awesome!
I went for the RS5 brake kit as a direct bolt-on upgrade, ordered brand new through teilecar.com. It was fitted professionally but after just 500 miles, and following the official Brembo bedding procedure, I started to experience judder through the pedal. It seemed worse at low speeds and moderate pedal pressure, and also worsened when hot after receiving some abuse which I applied liberally in attempt to rule out uneven pad deposits as the cause to no avail.
A runout gauge showed that the offside front disc was within tolerance but the nearside was seriously out, causing the pad to come into contact with the disc once per rotation. I was advised to replace the discs but given the cost involved and the fact that the discs were hardly used I couldn't face binning them so got in touch with Marcus. He was understanding on the phone and took the time to understand the problem before deciding that it was indeed worth skimming the discs. His depth of knowledge and calm manner inspired confidence so we arranged a time to meet.
He travelled over 100 miles from Cambridge to my workplace, turned up on-time and once again spent time discussing the problem, examining the brakes and trying to weed out the root cause. It was decided that either a manufacturing defect or having run the car with buckled wheels during the initial bedding-in phase were likely to be the cause and he was 99% sure that a skim would resolve the issue. He was careful with the car and meticulous in his work, mechanically minded and clearly a skilled engineer. He cleaned up the mounting faces on each front hub and disc, confirmed the excessive runout on the nearside and set to work with his Pro-Cut lathe. After a short time both discs were skimmed and looked gorgeous with perfectly clean and consistent faces. Runout was now either zero or well within tolerances and Marcus was happy enough that the judder would be cured.
I was asked to take the car for a run, performing several hard stops to re-bed the discs and pads in doing so, and immediately I knew the judder was gone. I returned a happy man! Since then I've put 2000 miles on the car, including a mix of daily grind and spirited runs, and the brakes have been perfect - smooth, progressive and exactly how they should be. I paid £200 all in, including Marcus' travel expenses, saving myself hundreds of pounds in replacement discs which probably wouldn't be as good as mine are now after having been skimmed on my car's hubs.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Marcus and his excellent mobile disc skimming service.
Brake judder? You need Marcus at discskimmers.com
Re: Brake judder? You need Marcus at discskimmers.com
I had this before with some Alcon and then a RS6 set up i worked out to be rusty hubs and the chimps not cleaning them
properly before fitting so the discs never properly interfaced with the hub and the tolerances involved are so minute its
so easy to get wrong. Glad you got it sorted did you get my email?
