It's not just Audi dealers that are stealers!

Post by MikeFish » Wed Oct 01, 2014 8:39 am

It seems we aren't the only one's getting ripped off by have-a-go stealers.
I've been looking at a Porsche Cayenne Turbo S. There's not many of these rare beasts available and even rarer to find one with the spec I want.
There was one up for sale for a week or 2; perfect spec but high milage (76k on an 09 plate). It was private sale and orignally up for 27K. After a week it dropped to 26k. Then on Friday it appeared on a dealers site for 28k. Fair enough I thought, I'd expect to pay a little more for the dealer assurance with warranty. By Monday it had gone; not surprising it was a good spec and fairly priced given that it is just around the corner from the killer 100k mileage (from a resale price point of view). Anyway, by Tuesday it was now on another dealers site for 33k!! The rip off gits! This car has gone up 7k in the space of 4 days! And is just shy of 77K now although still touted as 76K.
There was another one with similar spec and miles with a dealer for 30k. But last week the milage details disappeared from the website and the price jumped up to 33k!

Pretty sure that's what we in the western world call 'business'

My point is the greedy dealers are just trying to make a quick buck and when it is a rare car like this it affects the price of any other car being put onto the market as I'm pretty sure they look at what few other cars are on market at that time and what they are up for and advertise accordingly.
This car is now up for sale at 5k for than it was 2 days ago. The 1st dealer only had it a few days. The other similar car up for sale went up by 3 grand (at the same dealer), pretty sure it was a reaction to the first one going up in value. When there is only 5 or so of these cars in the whole country for sale at any one time and 3 of them are the wrong colour or spec it means I either have to pay their inflated prices or wait longer for another one to come along.
I'm not against anyone earning any money and I understand it's all about supply and demand but I see many of these cars up for sale for ages other than being shifted from dealer to dealer so I don't think the demand is outstripping the supply. I'm prety sure they will drop their prices eventually when no-one will pay their prices but they won't make a loss so their is a bottom limit which I think is more than the car is worth given the mileage. Maybe someone sees it differently, I don't know.

If you had 50 ice creams in the desert and 100 buyers what would you do?

Call it greedy or call it commercialism, same difference!
2004 C5 RS6 - Missano Red (the fastest colour...) - Departed
2004 C5 RS6 - Sprint Blue (the prettiest colour...) - Poorly

That's my point, they are not selling. Only people buying are the dealers. It's more like 100 ice creams with 50 buyers. People are being put off the Turbo S because the delaers are inflating the price and people are buying the Turbo version instead. I might do the same if I can't find the spec I want at right price as there is a much wider choice of cars.
Of course this is not a long term problem as when they don't sell them they will drop the prices but still annoying nonetheless.

  • - Apply for an import licence with option to export.
    - Procure numerous avenues for finance.
    - Deploy a four-tier marketing campaign.
    - Negotiate clear wholesale 'economy of scale' thresholds.
    - Scope supply alternatives with various quality and seasonal adjustments including considered mark-ups.
    - Strengthen retail price position and sales force knowledge.
    - Locate cost-effective customer service centres.
    - Structure up-sell matrix, support products and loss-leaders.
    - Secure strong geographic regions without sacrificing supply chain.
    - Scope expansion territories for strategic purposes.
    - Beef up security and reduce shrinkage.
It'd look like this...
