potential RS2 purchase & also a performance question

Post by craigw1 » Fri Feb 25, 2005 12:16 pm

Hi guys, thinking of buying an rs2 as a family wagon/fun car, will be predominantly driven by gf in week school run & shopping & by myself on weekends for fun & long trips.

A couple of questions, the car I'm considering is RHD, 1994 model, all usual options, 75k miles, havent seen or driven it yet but just wondered if there was anything I should especially look out for apart from the obvious.

Secondly, how would you guys, the experts feel the Rs2 would function as a family car etc, I have only been in one once & that was at about 150mph on a track so not "usual" driving circumstances! The chap who owned that one has given me some good advice but i'm keen to know as much as I can.

Thirdly, how does the performance fare with the S4 (2.7 model) as this is also a consideration for me.

Thanks in advance,

craigw (from pistonheads & the vmax event)

RS2 is easily able to function as a family school run and shopping car.
Car is easy to drive - clutch, gearbox and steering are relatively easy to operate. RS2 refined at lower speeds and you'd be hard pushed to tell it was a performance car below 3K revs as the turbo does'nt kick in until 3.5K or so. Brakes etc all easy to use and visibility is good.
Space wise the car obviously is'nt as big as other estates but provides good space for children both in front and back.
Rear boot space is acceptable and rear sill is lowish so easy to load.
Fuel consumption about town is'nt going to be great - expect to average 21/22 mpg in traffic - in really heavy traffic mine goes down to 18mpg. On a longer run you can get 28mpg if you don't bury the load pedal too much. Running costs are'nt huge provided the car is kept in good condition - I've had mine since new and the biggest cost item other than normal servicing (which is quite reasonable) is the brakes. In my case, I don't use the car daily and consequently items like the brake discs corrode. Replacements from Audi are very expensive although you can source parts from Porsche or other aftermarket suppliers. Build wise the RS2 is built to last and should'nt have any problems with rust. The leather seats can dry out whilst the alcantara ones can get grubby. Both can be cured by specialist cleaning and conditioning.
Performance wise - an S4 has more low down torque but does'nt have the same big rush when the turbo cuts in - even 10 years on an RS2 is a seriously quick car when revved - it also brings a smile to your face when you extend the car like this. I guess what I'm saying is that the RS2 is very much a Jekyll and Hyde car which is one of things I find beguiling about the car.

I'm also trying not to be tempted !
Been told by Martyn at VAGParts that they are more expensive to insure than S2 , more likely to be stolen, and that rear bumper is obsolete ( or about to be and costs over £1k unpainted)
Bodyshell is galvanised and strong. Engines if serviced with regular oil changes are capable of 200k miles at least( unlikely to be a sn issue with such a low mileage.
There appears to be issues with brakes as the pads ( & discs?) are Audi specific ( ??) and the dealers charge three times the ususal Porsche prices. An upgrade to larger discs can get around that issue.
There appears to be plenty of info on the S2 Forum as well - worth looking at. One of the guys is in the process of buying a 20,00 miler in RS Blue !!!

Hi there. I bought an RS Blue one last October. I drove the family to the Alps for Christmas in it fully loaded with presents etc and so can vouch for the fact that it is practical. At the moment, my wife is using it for the daily school run, whilst I get it for the weekend. So I can vouch for it's practical side. It's also reliable - more so than our other car - a Merc Diesel. So I fully recommend it and as scillyisles said it's a true Jekyll and Hyde car .

Well, i have come from having an RS2 for 2.5 years to having an S4 2.7.

No doubt aboubt it the RS2 is quick, but then the S4 is no slouch. My S4 has been mapped-MTM 320 and it feels not too far off what my RS was.My RS was virtually ultra reliable, it had a couple of issues namely a fuel pump and hall sender, but it never let me down.Equally neither has the S4 yet.

Mileage is not really an issue, unless it has not been looked after.Regular oil changes and cambelts on time....mine was up to 175,000miles, although i had the turbo rebuilt. Parts can be quite expensive, like brakes and stuff, but then no Audi S/RS is going to be cheap. From my own experience i feel that the S4 uses more fuel than the/my RS did.

The major difference is in the driving of the car; there was abslotuley nothing wrong with the RS,Jekylland Hyde is apt, but the S4 just feels a hell of a lot newer. It is just so easy to drive and effortlessly smooth.....

They are 2 completely different animals, but one thing you do get with the RS is knowing that you are driving something a bit different to everyone else......

god you lot are dangerous!

brilliant, thx guys, great info.

by the way, when i got piloted in the RS2 at high speed we did a 2 mile runway straight and then some fairly hard bends and we weren't far off the RS6 we were racing. I was very impressed. Chap in RS6 looked a little peeved!

I agree with everyone else. The biggest difference for me is the RS2 is the original "RS", plus it's the only one with Porsche connections. So rare that you could go a year without even seeing one!
In every area where the s2 was lacking, the RS2 has been improved ie seats, brakes and ultimately performance! It may be "old" now but it must still be ranked one of the best supercars that you can use everyday!!!

I am planning on moving to New Zealand, and dont seem to be able to take my RS2 with me due to no frontal impact tests done on the car. I have looked at other possibilities when I get there, New S4 or RS4. But I really just want to keep my RS2. It just has some unexplained uniqueness over the other cars. Practical for the family, even though I get a bit peeved when daughters push feet up against rear of front seats, and load/offload luggage onto back bumper. I will definetly buy another.

A unique car. Buy one !
But make sure you have a local specialist or audi dealer that can identify a member of the service staff with hands on knowledge (they do exist if you ask around)
They take the miles well if used but can hide equally well problems. I would be more than happy to give you a checklist based on my experience. Equally check all the buying advice posts here and on S2 forum.
Drive a few to know the difference between good and bad. Walk away if any doubt or post for advice. Be very careful if chipped. I will PM you my views if you wish.
I would choose to buy from a forum owner (here or S2 forum) You can usually get a very good idea from previous posts re problems the car has had and more important the solutions.
Consider a specialist inspection or AA/RAC as they guarantee the inspection and you can get it serviced ASAP and go back to them if faults have been missed.
Finally they are worth the effort as they are fantastic :D

If I can add that you are all a bunch of bastards

I am viewing an RS2 tonight which has done 210000km and I was hoping that someone might be able to put something in my head that makes my heart not dominate so easily.

It is cheap, but fully Audi serviced with new brakes and 18 months MOT left (this is Switzerland)

My efforts to persuade my gf that a 4wd estate from Audi, with airbags is sensible is so far not going too well!!!

OK.I drove the car last night. It felt good for a car of 11 years old and 210000km - it goes like a rocketship - although I have to admit on a dark unknown road with the owner next to me I really didnt have the balls to explore the cars limits. Onto the motorway I booted it in 3rd, no wheelspin, no squirm, just back into the seat scariness as revs move towards 7000 faster then all but the Lotus Carlton (which is my benchmark for fast saloons/sensible cars).

It is has a fully stamped Audi history, although is in need of a service and emissions test - which is part of the price negotiation.

I did notice a continuous howl from the engine as I drove - is that just the Turbo not spinning up at low revs?

What things are realisitically going to need to be replaced over the 3 years - 50000km?

Timing chain at 260000 but what else and when?

She will love it. My wife thinks my car is very sensible. It is the only car I have ever had that you can get all the family in (including the dog) and their luggage.
