Just used Autoglym clay bar kit........(again)

Post by carsarecool » Sun Sep 07, 2014 1:37 pm

.......a 2.5hr "autumn/winter prep" clean for the car today as I won't be using it much for the next month due to travel, so I thought I'd try a clay bar.

The results are very good. To the touch it is very, very smooth compared to non-treated paintwork.. The paint is so much cleaner and after a super esin polish and sealant it looks better than when I picked it up. There were a a few marks on the paintwork which never polished out but the clay got rid of them.

£26.99 well worth the money as I reckon you get 4-8 applications before you run out of clay, obviously dependent on how dirty the car is when you use it.

The only downside is time....it takes a while and a bit of effort.

Strange coincidence! I've just spent 2 - 3 hours today clay-barring mine to remove some truly awful tar deposits. Darn roadworks! Only change from your routine was I'm using Autoglym HD wax every few weeks as opposed to super resin polish as I find it's a better dirt barrier, and the beading is far more impressive. Looks ace now!

Yes a handy bit of kit straight off the shelf and a fair price with great results, I followed mine up with a wash in dodo juices born to be mild and their pro purple haze looked a million dollars. That was about 8 weeks back, so hope to get it cleaned up for Box hill this Saturday

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't super resin polish just an abrasive polish to revive the paintwork and that would always need a wax coating applied to it afterwards?

The OP did say "...and sealant", not sure if that matters, was he meant to use wax only?
No matter where you go, there you are.

SRP is not what I would describe as an abrasive polish.
Present: 2010 Ice silver B8 S4 s-tronic saloon (standard)
Past: 1998 Agate grey B5 S4 saloon (MRC tuned)
Hers: 2011 Volcano red 8P A3 Sportback 2.0 TDI 170 sport quattro

SRP is "lightly" abrasive and contains "fillers" which fill up the swirls/scratches over time.
There is Paint Renovator for the heavy jobs.

I used clay bar with AG Rapid Detailer then SRP and finally High Gloss Protection and the result is really good although the quality of the Audi paint helps.

I read this before doing it (remember my bonnet being screwed by bird poo) - See below:

Ah, yes sealant will do the job.

Yup.

I used to swear by it - used SRP all the time on my Golf MkII back in the day. Now I try not to use SRP as it only temporarily fills problems, I'd rather have a good (fairly) fault free paint finish and then wax it.

Just take it for a full detail once a year, keeps it looking good, the snow foam just turns the tar into a rubbery texture which just comes of with the wash afterwards

Not the best thing to remove Tar,, should have used Tardis, but don't sniff it , you're be high as a kite.
