opened up a complaint with audi today!!!

Post by geordie jay » Mon Sep 08, 2014 9:23 pm

hi guys,,went to my local audi garage today to see about a small bit of corrosion that i have just above front drivers sill.it hasnt penetrated the paint but starting to bubble underneath.(hopefully i can get some pics on here, having trouble downloading from my phone)anyway he had a look of it and said yes it will be covered then proceeded to check passengers side and found that it was starting to happen underneath passenger wheel arch aswell which i didnt relise as really small...
and again said it would be covered by corrosion warranty.
then he hit me with it......he said that the metal underneath paint has so many layers, and these layers are only covered for 3 yrs its the initial bottom or first layer underneath all these layers that are covered for the 12yr warranty WTF!!but stated that for a good will solution that audi will pay 70% and i will have to pay 30%.he said that i will probably have to pay about £200 and audi will pay the rest...
so went back in showroom and waited till he sorted the exact price out.when he came back he said that i would have to pay for labour and parts and also can i add that earlier he said that they wouldnt fix the problems they would just put two new wings on...so he proceeded to say that the wings were more expensive than he thought and said that the intial price was £1365 to fix car and i would have to pay £470 of that which included VAT..WTF!! i stated that this wasnt a issue of neglect from owners but a problem with car from day 1...anyway i was told to ring audi customer care and when i got home i did just that..i have told them exactly what was said and said they would get back to me within 48hrs...just wondering what everybodys thoughts are and has anybody else had issues like this with audi..i got a bad feeling that they not gunna move on price but im pretty annoyed something like this would even happen on such a expensive audi car.

cheers jay

Despite them already being approved for repair up here?

Just get them repainted by someone else if they're going to try to charge that kind of money!

I'd just get them repainted again if they are talking £200...

These cars are 7-8 years old, I fully accept there is going to be some corrosion, especially if you live on the coast.
I would have been delighted at that price to be honest, as long as the job was good and the repair then guaranteed.
And I'm assuming it's the rear wheel arch that has the corrosion, the fronts are aluminium right?

It's the fronts. Aluminium is more easily corroded than steel, that's why it's used offshore as a sacrificial anode.

The money isnt really a issue..the fact that a 50k/60k car when new has started to corrode after 7yrs is to me..the bloke at audi even admitted that audi cocked up when painting bottom of wings because theres not enough protection and should of added more layers of paint on wings and rear arches.he said that he had a couple in for same reason and thats just one dealer...if i have to pay what they want then so be it..but the initial price of £1360 that he said was what audi would charge.i thought that it was a cheap price anyway..but we will see

Isn’t it normally zinc or magnesium alloys ?

Beat me to it timster, my company builds trees, we call them zinc anodes but I'm no metallurgist.

Galvanic series goes Magnesium (corrodes so quickly it's generally useless), Zinc (most common offshore), Aluminium (last longer and can use less material), mild steel... all the way up to Gold and Platinum. Anything less noble will corrode more readily.

The point is that Aluminium still corrodes, and usually more than steel. It doesn't rust though, aluminium oxide leaves small white deposits.

Exactly the same situation as me 4 months ago however Audi gave me 2 weeks i think from making the offer to have the work completed or the goodwill would have been revoked, I took it as far as i could with Audi UK and got absolutely nowhere so accepted the offer.
Make sure you have a good look at the car after the repair as i rejected my car 3 times before I drove away.

I stand corrected, I looked up a b.o.m for a tree, it's called an impalloy III alluminium platform anode.
Had a look at my wings, all seems well, for now. :)

Most are zinc, and even the aluminium ones are alloys with a lot of zinc too... this crap is literally my job though, so don't feel too bad.

Which Audi dealer is this? My arches are sweet but there is lacquer milking/ lifting around the passenger front door bump strip that I've always wondered if Audi would entertain if I brought up the issue
