Engine Cylinders

If I was to be facing towards the car, with the bonnet open, which one of the engine cylinders would be number 1 and 2?

Thanks Rick, I've got the 6 cylinder engine. I think I get the general principle though. First cylinder is driver side closest to the head light, right?

Drivers headlight is 1

you have a misfire problem?

The engine is not running smoothly, coughing and spluttering at times.

Fault got logged yesterday as the EPC light flashed up until the next time I got in the car again.

Going to Audi later today. Hope its nothing sinister and a straightforward fix.
