Thanks - why don't Audi realise that in the UK at least its fast Avants we want not Saloons. Time to look around at old RS6 and new A6 4.2 I think.

too damn funny..... we Americans even get blamed for what you see as flaws in an amazing car.
just don't buy one.....
Do you really think Audi was foremost worried about what us American buyers wanted ?
Please......

Will I replace my S4 with one ?
Damn right. First black one off the boat.
Would I have bought a B5 RS4 if it was offered here ? yup....

If you don't like the car, go buy a bimmer.
don't blame the 'blingers' on the other side of the pond for Audi's designs.

First impressions:

+ the back of the car, really looks nice
+ high rev engine with no turbos
+ interior looks nice and the seats seems to have much more side "keeping" than the B5 Recaro
+ the wide fenders, especially the rear one

- the weight, 1650kgs is way to much for a sports car
- the front nose is yuck!
- the wheels
- the brakes seems to be similar or same to the RS6, which means nothing special

The first impression of the car is negative, especially because of the front nose and high weight but still looking forward to drive one.

I'm currently putting out around 395bhp/500Nm. I look forward to the day I get to compare on the road/track with an RS.

Turbos are out for S & RS cars, they have cost Audi too much money in warranty claims.

Not everyone likes avants.

I also find it amazing that any car can be judged so harshly before being seen, let alone driven!

Like I said earlier, who would be a manufacturer, you can't win.
Understood David..but i saw the RS4 B5 and brought one without driving it! thats how much i liked it, the mere fact that it drove well was a plus...
Avants are more european, and its a real kick in the teeth that Audi have made a car for the USA first (perhaps thats why non of us were invited to the launch) and have waited to show an Avant at Frankfurt, my sources were right about frankfurt,, and not Geneva , but the suprise was the saloon first with no avant....
I will reserve my judgements until then.

I am with you on this David although I would prefer to see the Avant. At least the saloon will be well into production and visable in the flesh before I will need to spec an Avant (assuming I go on to place an order).

We dont blame you guys... its just that the RS marque has been given away to the development of car explictly built for a wanting market, im sure the sales will be high in the states and lots of $ will be handed over, infact i would imagine that the allocation of cars is greater for the usa than anywhere else!

I agree with you Kurt and disagree with the slant of John's original and subsequent posts here.

and it seems that they invite American enthusiasts also!
Simon, what leads you to this assumption ?

I think you will see an avant or two at Geneva next week, don't worry.

It will bury you Scotty, simple as that. May only have a little more power but the dynamics will be a big step up.

One plus for the saloon first it will iron out any engine, gear box brake problems etc first before the avant gose into production.
But my guess is that it will follow the RS6 and do a plus at the end of line.
personaly iv'e never realy like the look of the Audi saloons the seem to make better looking estates 8) IMO

How will they do a plus on a n/a car already pushing out 100 bhp/litre? It was easy on the RS6 but not sure for the RS4.

Anyone know if the new S6 will get the RS4 engine?

Well I think it is alright on first impressions.

The RS4 & RS6 were pretty understated, Audi have obviously decided to widen the appeal of the car - probably because they still have brand new unregistered RS6's sitting about.

I will still hold out for an Avant version, but having never owned an S or RS Audi before I will almost definitely buy it unless it drives very poorly.

I know there are people who would upgrade from the old RS4 to this, but to me that is not really a viable option. I could not justify spending 30K on a 5 year old car. When the original RS4 came out I was not in the market for a rapid estate - my wife even laughed when I showed her one in a dealership. I was drooling, she was laughing. Times have changed and I am now in the market for an estate and this is top of the list.

I agree, the front grille is an acquired taste whcih looks even worse with a white UK regsitration plate in the middle of it. And even the wife said the alloys are a bit bling. But were they ever going to top the RS4 alloy design? a classic which unfortunately found its way onto every Audi including the A2! I will say that they are a step up from the 5 spokes on the RS6 though.

The limited production numbers is a concern - without a cap on RHD examples I cannot see how this car will maintain a strong residual like the old RS4. This could be the one factor that makes me cancel the order.

Did BMW cap rhd M3s??....of course not and Audi wont either, retained residuals will be similar to the RS6 after a couple of years, ie not to good!
