Car and home security

It's normally with heindseight that you look into these things and fortunately for me it's not such a case.

After hearing of another attempted rs steal and seeing the itv program grand theft auto uk where a tracker can be easily jammed and removed, it poses the question:

What's the best security system you have for your car and house?

I'm thinking the best can only be a deterrent such as drive posts, CCTV etc.

What does everyone have your willing to share your thoughts and experiences

Pretty standard stuff
- floodlights always good
- CCTV can help
- avocet euro door locks. These prevent bumping, snapping and forcing
- obvious flashing home alarm. Personally I go for (if you can) perimeter alarms. No point an alarm going off when people inside the house.
- driveway posts useful.

You can also put a simple switch/RFID relay on the starter button.

I think an unfortunate truth these days is that the more security you have the more likely they will confront the owner rather than break in and steal the keys. There have been a few incidents of people threatened in their homes or as they got out of their cars. For me an aftermarket hidden kill switch seems the best without the activation of which means the car will not start. But in the end if I am confronted by a knife wielding individual I will just hand over the keys and tell them the brakes squeak. The kill switch now gives me time to get me and/or my loved ones out the back of the house while they think they are good to go and get in the car only to find it won't start. I reckon it wouldn't be long before you just gave up and got out of there.

Now cars are disappearing without keys again, anything you can put between your car and freedom. Put the lawnmower in the shed and use the garage, putting a gate across the drive, electronic driveway bollard, blocking the car in, disclock etc etc

Great idea on the starter motor relay

Yeah I'm trying to a decent starter motor relay and a remote kill switch

Sorry - I meant starter button (which I guess is te same thing!)
As it's very easy to wire, low voltage and amps and in emergency easy to bypass if you know it is there.
I used a simple relay with RFID tag. Actually have it spare now.

The best one if you are electrical minded is the fuel pump relay. If you do it properly you can have the car turn over just not fire Into life. With the high pressure pumps on fsi the engine may fire on te stored pressure but then just die.

The advantage is that anybody breaking in relies On Element of surprise. I don't think many would attempt to rentrr after the home owner already has been alerted and given say a couple minutes to prepare.
If it were me I think is be looking for some very sharp knives and any kitchen chemicals I could lay my hands on.

I think driveway posts are begging for a challenge. Any thief passing by is going to think there's something tasty inside and go for a robbery to acquire the tasty treats. They stick out like a sore thumb in a residential area.

Decent gates are a simple deterrent, far less conspicuous and like any other on a street. That's unless you're fortunate enough to have a private driveway with a separate garage, then I'd deffo go for posts as an added barrier as if they get that far you'll be needing them!! lol

Yeah I have a double drive and it's all open in the street so a post and my van will be in the way to stop any thief. Managed to get my c5 in the garage with a inch to spare but a c6 is a no go

I noticed that the Police were advocating going back to low-tech solutions like disklok & gearlok etc as the vast majority of OEM security systems can be bypassed fairly easily nowadays with the right setup.
