Transmission whine when cold

Post by Madelvic » Tue Feb 08, 2005 10:09 pm

My S4 makes very obvious whining noises when driving off from cold.

So bad I crawl away for the first few hundred yards until the noises go.

Anybody else have the same problem?

Is it a problem?

What makes the noise? Diff?

A quick read a few threads down would have highlighted this thread  :

No, Scotty that's a different noise I was referring to in the thread you highlighted: more of a clanking noise (metal on metal) which has, incidentally, all but disappeared since I had the car serviced (still would like an insight into what it was and how a basic service could have cured it).

Grittle - yes, I also get that, could be transmission oil taking time to warm before working to full efficiency? Had the car for 20k miles and has not become an issue yet, so wouldn't worry.

That said, the transmission whine on the B6 is quite noticeable, even when warm. Try driving in first gear with the windows down at about 20 mph....but I think it sounds quite funny, like your making sound effects for the next Terminator movie!! :)

If it's any help, I'm over 57K miles and all the noises are still the same as when I from new, as far as I can remember that is.

Thanks Scotty - hadn't spotted it when I looked through the threads. Take it you have not had any problem getting Audi to act?

Even though I sent them that link in advance, they didn't have the parts to do it when the car was in for its service last Friday. It's going in again on the 22nd. :bash:
