I moved to a rotary as soon as I bought the RS.

I found the DA painfully laborious on VAG paint with any deep swirling. If you've seen my thread you'll have seen the results.







Admittedly that's fresh paint on the bonnet, wings and bumper but it wasn't to the standard it is now.

It's taken me a year on and off to get it to where it is now and I don't even drive the car every day. Its 100% impossible to keep a car completely swirl free even if you 2 bucket wash with grit guard and pat dry. Using any type of cloth and washing regularly will induce minor swirling no matter what.

If I were you I'd practice on an old bonnet with a borrowed DA and a Rotary, see how you get on and practice with pads and mixes of compound. Read some forums and go from there.

I wouldn't pay a detailer to do my car though, it's far more satisfying admiring your own hard work.

I do paint correction and have always taken the 'gently, gently' approach with DA as I can always do another pass but costly to put clear coat back. The other day I was prepping one of my sales cars with a defect on the bonnet. DA'd it a few times didn't even touch it, so the rotary come out and then that didn't get there either so re-paint only option to make it spot on. I thought whilst I was there I would lay into it with the cutting pad, high speed and weight behind it. I had plumes of smoke coming off the panel and a god awful smell, I touched it and burned my finger tip That said waited for it to cool, did a couple of low speed passes and the 'burn' was gone. Where you do need to watch a rotary is where adjacent panels meet as there it is easy to remove all layers as it really digs in on the panel edges.

Don't get me wrong I always get scared doing a customers car but modern paint is as hard as Bruce Lee!

Oh, thought I'd better say as it's a sales car I only did one of the usual 4 stage correction i.e. on this I only did the 'cut' stage then quick detail spray on top of that.

Excellent thread this...makes for very interesting reading. Some of you guys have brought that Black metallic up amazingly well!

I can vouch for the chipex system too though as that brought up the front of my old car really well after that was covered in road rash.
