996 to RS6, Deed Done (At Last!)

Post by GaryC » Sat Jan 15, 2005 6:08 pm

It's been about 5 months and a few questions on this BBS since starting to ponder about getting an RS6, but with the hard-deadline of April when our second child due is due fast-approaching, a decision needed to be made on a replacement for my porsche 996. So since the start of the year I've been scouring the Audi approved car website on a daily basis looking for the right car to come up, and this morning I finalised a deal on an 04 plate RS6 Avant which I will be picking up next Saturday.

Since my first test drive of an RS6 back in September (which left me fairly ambivalent) I've had two further and longer test drives in different cars which have dispelled my initial misgivings. No, the RS6 still does not give the level of driver involvement of the porsche, but I was wrong to approach it the first time expecting the responses of a pure sportscar. Once you get used to the different type of driving experience it provides and appreciate everything the car offers, it's star qualities really shine through. I really can think of no finer car for the family and for weekends away.

But I suppose this is all just preaching to the converted :)

Anyway I'm very much looking forward to collecting it next weekend...now I just need to keep my web browser away from AMD's website :)

Gary.

I can lend you a couple of dogs as well (assuming its an Avant) to exploit its true family potential. I changed from a Cayenne T to a 6 plus, and I know which one my kids prefer. (I've now put a deposit on a vasectomy, rather than a people carrier.)

Have fun.

I changed from a 996 to an RS6 in November. 10% of the time I miss the 911. The rest of the time I don't.

You have chosen wisely.

It's a mugello blue avant. It wasn't my first choice of colour (was ideally after silver or grey), but after stopping off every Sunday on the way to the playground with my son in his pushchair :) to look at the brand-new blue one they still have in Hitchin Audi the colour grew on me.

Thanks for the offer of the dogs, but I think two kids in the back will keep me occupied enough :)

We could almost start a "2 Labradors" forum here! Can I just recommend to anyone the benefit of rear blinds on the avant, which not only shade your dogs, but also stop those unsightly nose smears on your rear window. Shame they haven't got a solution for the rear/rear/side ones.

As for me in the driver's seat - I just try not to brake as hard when I've got a cold!

Well after a few more days of waiting than I'd hoped, I finally picked up the RS6 today. I drove it back home during rush-hour around the M25 so was taking it steady. Just opened it up once for a few seconds when I was nearly home and the road was clear - feels nice :)

To be honest, I was beginning to think I was jinxed and would never see the car. First of all there were problems with my building society cheque clearing so I could pay the balance on the car. Smile said they'd never received it, and to give it one more day before reporting it lost/stolen...then it suddenly appears as cleared funds in my account 24 hours later!

Then I went to pick up the car last Saturday. We completed the paperwork, transfered all our luggage and child seat over, then the sales lady started it and noticed a brake fluid level warning light on, so they wanted to get it checked out and wouldn't let me take the car...but being Saturday they didn't have any technicians in. They were very apologetic and lent me their fully loaded S4 avant demonstrator as a courtesy car (which was actually bloody good, and had me questioning whether I really needed the extra space and pace of the RS6).

Anyway, the RS6 was sorted and I took this afternoon off work to go and collect it. I was driving down the A1(M) wondering what else might go wrong to thwart my plans, perhaps a puncture or a breakdown? After about 10 miles along the M25 in fairly heavy traffic, suddenly ahead of me in the overtaking lane is what looks like a piece of metal box section about 2 inches square and 2 feet long, handily positioned width-ways in the lane, just where the left wheels are going to go. There's not much I can do to avoid it - neither the armco, nor the traffic in the middle lane is appealing, and standing on the anchors is probably recipe for a multiple pile-up. So bang-bang, both left tyres get blown out, and a few minutes later I'm on the hard-shoulder waiting for audi road-side assistance before I've even taken ownership of my audi. To the S4's credit it hardly flinched at all when it lost both left tyres, and although I was pissed off that people can be so careless with the condition of their cars/lorries or payloads that such things can drop off onto the motorway, I was at least glad I wasn't sitting in a wrecked S4 waiting for an ambulance.

The recovery truck arrived after about 50 minutes and loaded the S4 onto the back, and I finally made it to Tonbridge Audi about an hour late where my RS6 was waiting freshly cleaned and gleaming. Although I wasn't happy about not being able to pick up the car on Saturday, I have to say that if you judge a dealership by the efforts they make to resolve a problem, I've only got praise for Tonbridge Audi. The S4 avant they lent me was the best and most suitable car they had in stock, and they waived the £250 excess on the insurance after my accident with their car and simply said they hoped they'd get my business again.

I just hope now that my period of owning the car is somewhat less eventful :)

Gary.

PS: Alan, yes I am Hitchin based, mini meet should definitely be a possibility (at least when we get the next baby out of the way!)

My wife was in hospital for disc surgery. She asked me to pick her up in the RS6, That's the difference. She would have said anything except the 911!

Gary, keep posting. I will be interested to hear how you like it.

I am also one of those who recently owned a 996. In fact I would have kept it longer and waited to put a deposit down for the 997 but 17 months later, little did I know that wifee would give me two sons and a daughter to cart around! so sadly, the 996 had to go. What did I do after 8 years of porsches? (928 & 996) I thought twins and all their kit will fit well into a Range Rover, so I bought a vogue. Fine, it was practical for those long trips I had to make to see the outlaws, but god! was it a let down. I went from a hare to to a slug overnight! (or should I say snail, at least it carries its own house!). Eight months later, with the announcement of another arrival I thought the RR I can't get 3 baby seats in a row, why not get a practical estate and be rid of the 4x4. Depreciation aside and despite no problems, I got rid of it and went for a test drive in a car which I had seen at a track. Within 2 weeks I picked up the RS6. realising that the kids love mess I decided to purchase with a Ford Galaxy to act as the family bus. Now, I have the best of both worlds, I've a practical stretch 996 and a bus! I have yet to really drive this monster. Cayenne? I think not!
