Tracker

Post by ChrisG » Thu Mar 13, 2003 9:14 pm

Any one of you have such devices ? I'm happy to receive a pm in order that you do not advertise what keeps yours where it should be. Who makes what and a site/link. I've read the reports in the past, are they really worth while if the insurance company only prefer as opposed to get or else. Going into S3. I think that the 'monitor' type of system would seem more worth while. Mine could go missing for 8 hours whilst in work and i wouldn't even know.

Hi Chris...

To be honest insurance companies that specify trackers must be fitted usually want 24hr monitored type systems anyway. NOT one where you report the loss ..... so if you are getting one as you said i'd go for the monitored. Check with your insurance company because you may get a discount and they will give you a list of those devices that qualify/or are accepted.

On my previous car it was a stipulation by the insurance company that I had a tracker installed, I went with the www.tracker.com system, it seemed ok, but how do you know until your car is stolen and what a way to find out that would be. When I sold the car AFN picked it up and sent it to Reading to be prepared for re-sale by transporter, and I did not recieve a call from tracker to say that the car was moving without the engine being started.

Therefore my feeling was that the system was great for re-locating the car once it had been stolen, but it did not proactively tell me that the car was being moved.

As I was selling the car it was no longer going to be my problem

That's beacuse there are three differnt types of tracker.

The simplest system isn't activated until you inform tracker that you car has been stolen. They then send a signal to the box which activates it and hey presto .. it starts giving out signals.

The better system is where the tracker monitors the ignition and if the car moves without the imobiliser being disarmed then it starts putting out the signal. That's when you get called to be told that your car is moving without you knowing about it. ie) the system is more pro-active.

I had the first system on my S6, and was always worried about the time between the car going and you finding it had gone. I have the newer system (with GPS and radio) on the RS6.. more peice of mind

Does this set up allow the car to be tracked if the car is being driven using the Audi keys?

Can confirm Tracker Monitor works as a friend has it on an HGV and it prevented thieves getting off the compound with the vehicle given the speed with which they contacted my friend to say vehicle was being moved.

See www.tracker-network.co.uk/ for more info. This system is used by all the UK Police Forces.

RAC Trackstar - http://www.ractrackstar.com/main/ - is the other main system.

AS long as the immobiliser is de-activated by the key then the tracker monitor is also de-activated. That how I think it works.

I suppose that the people at tracker can still activate it if needs be so.. I suppose, yes, in theory they could follow your position. DOn't know why they would want to do so though!

Misunderstanding me thinks
What I am trying to ascertain is can that set up be tracked if someone steals my keys and drives of with the car.
Eg Call tracker, my cars been nicked and I have tracker monitoring. Sorry sir the Keys have de-activated the tracker and we cannot track it.
Could be a bit of a problem in that situation.

Because if the keys were taken I'd still want to know wher the car is, so would the police. Hands up those who keep keys in an obviuos place in the house? Our keys are hidden, even in the house. It may prevent the opportunist but not the determined.
Thanks for the comments.

You can still activate the tracker by calling them with your code.. regardless of whether the keys are in the ignition or not...

I think there is some law or a good practice thing that when a car is being transported via trailer or back of a truck 'legally of course'. Doors are not locked or keys are in the ignition, alarms not activated etc thus the tracking device is not armed.

Dave is right, you can ask Tracker to be activated in case of car with keys being swiped.
