Advice / Help for a newbie

Post by jbyrne » Sun Jan 09, 2005 9:59 pm

Hi all,
Just purchased a Nov. 94 RS2, RHD, RS blue with blue alcantara, in December. Couldn't stop grinning ALL the home ( Edinburgh to Cork, Ireland ). I would appreciate any advice / info on the following ;
- ABS not working, ABS light in dash not working at all ( checked bulb & its ok ).
- Rear differential not working either.
- Am i right in thinking that front discs = Porsche 968 CS, rears are unique to RS2 ( due to offset ?? ) and where is best place to source these ?

Regards
John

There is a set of front and rear discs and pads in the classified section for sale atm (if they haven't been sold already).

Sure the rs2 boys will be along shortly to answer your other questions

Do you mean the diff lock button near the handbrake?
It only works if you are travelling below 15mph. Turns itself off once you go faster than that.

ABS on dash does not show unless rear diff locked via button at handbrake. It then illuminates to indicate it is disabled. Better in low grip conditions e.g. snow.
Guess that is one less Edinburgh RS2. Looked a good car on paper. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have mine. Worth looking thru the forum re owner experience. Find a good specialist to look after it rather than main dealer.
Please post more details about the car
Enjoy and welcome

Is this the RS2 with the 18" wheels that used to drive round Edinburgh?

No looked standard in the trader ad. Did not recognise the area of town from photo background.
The morningside car is still here. Followed him onto the bypass pre Xmas. The puff of blue smoke was worrying. Looks in good nick otherwise.
There was another I used to see around the botanical gardens. Could have been that one. Edinburgh Audi still 'look after' a couple or did.

Never seen the 18'' one. Not another Edinburgh RS2 !!

The car was from Perth, it is a standard & unmodified car and has 113,000 miles with FSH & copy of invoices for all work done. Also came with sales brochure and all previous mot's. It has the std brakes ( ie 304 mm ), i would consider upgrading however the 4 callipers were replaced approx 2,000 miles ago! I would like to change the disks as these have corroded on the outer edges ( however not that bad yet ). It needs the ABS & diff lock sorting, the trims at the bottom of the doors are starting to bulge, needs front wheel bearing.
With regard to the ABS issue, the light does not work even when ignition switched on, no sign of cut wires under dash or at pump unit, any ideas/suggestions welcome to try and identify problem.
I think the diff does not engage at all as the light does not come on, and i cant hear it engaging ( as i can on my '88 mb Ur quattro ).

Thanks
John

Well I was concerned re my diff lock working recently. So I pushed the switch and you could feel/hear it working at low speed in the work carpark. worth that simple check. The diff lock switch is a circuit board with bulb usually soldered under the pic by the handbrake ( accessed via removing rear ash tray bolt +- one in front of handbrake under small panel Better details on S2 central website). That may have failed.
Finally you can listen for the vacuum activatiion at rear diff with car jacked/on ramp with someone else pushing switch.
I need to do the door trims myself Vagparts can supply ALL the bits you need.
Did you get the car in Perth or Edinburgh ?

The blue RS2 with 18s (i think they were 6 spoke Kahns) used to be owned by the woman at Auto Image. She sold i when she got her yellow RS4. I had seen it driving around the west side of Edinburgh - going to Heriot Watt university a couple of times.

Have you priced all those lower door trims yet ? I put S2 ones on mine as they are a lot cheaper. I paid just over £100 for all 8 mouldings & all the clips, etc from VAG Parts. The RS2 ones are slightly thicker & look a bit more 'chunky' but IIRC they worked out at least 3 times more expensive.

It's also possible to remove that diff lock switch by CAREFULLY prizing a small screwdriver around the edge. That's how I got mine off.

I did but cannot recall total cost. I only need front two. I think around £100 ish. Put off as the only decent paintshop in the area is outside Edinburgh and I would get the bonnet done at the same time (lacquer defect). Just have not the time at present.
Good thought
