How can I find out what spec a car has?

Post by gilford » Sat Feb 01, 2014 6:35 pm

Is there any way you can find out what spec an Audi is?

I'm toying with the idea of getting a FL RS5 but the person who has it for sale has no idea of the options, I don't want a 400 mile round trip to find out it is poverty spec

When I was a BMW man I could just ring them up and they would e mail me the spec sheet, my local Audi dealer seems resilient to do this?

Cheers

Audi were really unhelpful during my purchase of a used S4 this last week. Had to piece together replies from the seller, talking to 2 Audi garages and writing to AudI UK AND Ingolstadt.
I think Audi UK will eventually relent and give you the options but won't divulge details of service history due to 'data protection' - nonsense !
For example, the car had nearly £8k of work 14000 miles ago but Audi refused to tell me what was done. Tracked down the owner at the time - new engine under warranty ! You would think that fact would be helpful to both buyer and seller . . .

And as for getting to the bottom of music connectivity - feel like pulling my hair out

Use a brochure to determine what was standard equipment then a call to Audi customer services should reveal the options fitted. Simple.
Present: 2010 Ice silver B8 S4 s-tronic saloon (standard)
Past: 1998 Agate grey B5 S4 saloon (MRC tuned)
Hers: 2011 Volcano red 8P A3 Sportback 2.0 TDI 170 sport quattro

I don't understand how some one selling an RS5 would not know the spec??? If it's a dealer they would certainly know the spec because it would mean more money for them. I think if it become the norm for Audi dealers to give out all service and options details just by a phone call they would be inundated and make no money.
I have found my local dealer to be really helpful when I bought my latest addition. However as a family we have bought other new cars from the same dealership.

I bought my RS5 nearly 2 weeks ago, but before I even viewed the car I phoned audi customer service, gave the reg of the car that was for sale, and they sent me a email with the full spec of the car, and all of its service history.

Perhaps it depends on what you mean by service history.
Yes, they may tell you that it was serviced at n000 miles, at a certain date etc. but in my experience if there was any non-service specific work done on the car they are not helpful. Even the relevant Audi garage would not do that in my case.
As the man said - not like BMW.
Options too are difficult to pin down. The PR codes in the boot don't list everything ( mostly details of things a garage would need to know if replacement was needed - eg which engine version). Audi UK were unable to tell me which version of MMI I have . . . I'm still unsure. Looks like 2g but I have an MMI plus handbook post dating the registration date of the car by 4 months :drink:

Audi wont even tell me what warranty work was carried out on MY car whilst in MY ownership :?:

The fault the dealer repaired was specifically excluded so what they made up to justify it god only knows.
