R8 vs RS 5
R8 vs RS 5
I'm finally going to have buy two cars as the mrs is learning now.
I use the RS 5 as a daily drive and obviously can't let her drive it when she may want to drive from time to time.
So I'm thinking get a 2-3k run around Polo or similar as a DD for me and she can use it when she needs to do shopping etc.
So do I sell my RS 5 and get a V8 R8 and use the R8 as a weekend toy?
I do have my reservations as to whether the V8 R8 is much better than the RS, especially with the R-tronic gearbox.
Obviously I would go to a V10 but I don't think funds will allow.

Re: R8 vs RS 5
Keep the RS5 and add a banger?
Re: R8 vs RS 5
Can keep the RS 5 as I do bloody love it, just wondering if a V8 R8 would be an affordable step up.

Re: R8 vs RS 5
An R8 won't cost much more to run than your RS5, just be careful where you buy from.

Re: R8 vs RS 5
Is the R8 better? In a drag it isn't but dynamically it is but then there is the interior of the R8 which I'm not a massive fan of. I'm just worried I may regret it. I'm going to try and drive one to see.

Re: R8 vs RS 5
The only way. I've been looking at R8s and 911s. Former gives more horses for the money and vs a 997 is a better drive. The latter is a nicer place to be.Nickyboy wrote:Is the R8 better? Re: R8 vs RS 5
Hard to say if its better, the RS5 is a better daily driver I'd imagine and more usable, my R8 was a weekend car and it does that extremely well. I've a hankering for a V10, but I agree the interior and tech is looking very dated.
Re: R8 vs RS 5
I do also like the more exclusive RS 5 but then its an R8 and it looks awesome.

Re: R8 vs RS 5
Nicky as you know I went V8 R8, V10 R8, RS 5 then V10 in that order.
Your RS 5 is the daddy, so would be hard to give up (I'll buy it off you btw)
But, an R8 V8 > RS 5 IMO as a weekend toy. But, you have to buy the right spec espcially when it comes to interior otherwise it will be low rent. Carbon Fibre, Extended Leather and Alcantara headlining is when the R8 feels special, along with CF side blade....
At the end of the day its a mid engined all aluminium RWD biased car with superb handing and driver feedback....the RS 5 will feel like a boat in comparison on country roads or a track.
I loved my RS 5, really did, but it is a Grand Tourer. Did a great job of two trips to the 'ring with my mates in the back, but once on the 'ring it was abit barge like, but the trick diff and torque vectoring helped it feel more dynamic.
The R8 is spot on out of the box dynamically.
Straight line speed ok they will be neck and neck, but that's not the point, the R8 will instantly 'feel' better through the chassis and the wheel. You'll feel the car, you'll feel the superior dynamics.
And the R8, although its 6years old, still turns heads and still makes you feel special.
You're a young guy and so the R8 is a great thing to run at your age.
Feel free to PM me on any R8 queries if you start looking.

Re: R8 vs RS 5
Oh and for a cheapo DD.
I'd recommend a top spec Audi A2, I'm on my 5th although just agreed the sale of ours today (it has Panoramic roof, RNSE nav, cruise control, 17" RS4 alloys etc - £30 tax, 80MPG and 90PS in 900KG

Re: R8 vs RS 5
I hoped you'd be along. Cheers for that. Need to start looking for one, then drive one and then make a decision.
As you said the RS I have is pretty special which makes me want to keep it.

Re: R8 vs RS 5
TBH, I'd keep the RS 5 and just pcp or lease a VW up! For £99 a month
Job done.
Then get some track days in your RS 5 this summer...those Ceramics aren't there to look pretty!!

Re: R8 vs RS 5
Good shout on the VW Up, I tried to persuade a mate to go for one who was determined to finance a three year old Megane for an insane interest rate

Re: R8 vs RS 5
Seem anything you fancy Nicky?
I'm still torn. Cannot decide, order rs6 or find a v10 R8. I can't convince myself that in the case of the latter I wouldn't regret it in 12 months when the replacement lands.
