Noise on start-up?

Post by Pete.S » Thu Dec 09, 2004 8:32 pm

Ever since I've had my car, there's a terrible, but brief, very un-Audi-like clanking from the bottom of the engine when I first crank it after the car's been dormant for a while. Dealer said it's perfectly normal, and I've had no other problems. Anyone else get this on their B6's?

Also be interested to see what fuel you guys have experimented with; only been using 95 RON since purchase because of high mileage, anyone stuck religiously to 98, or used both and experienced definite performance/economy advantages with the higher grade?

Is it when its particually cold? Could possibly be the starter motor engaging for to long. Havnt had any problems with these engines yet. Apart from when they were first released! The Top Gear press car was actually a silver saloon but the Stig blew it up! All the timing chains at the back off the engine went pear shaped. It then came to light that this had happened on quite a few of the other early cars!

Good luck

Ash

I have the same noises when starting from cold, sounds like a A/C clutch engaging, I've not spoken to dealer yet. but I'm not too concerned. My car is 2004/04 9000 miles.

John

Interestingly, just had first service, the noise has disappeared. Didn't inform the dealer that carried out the service about the noise because was told by selling dealer wasn't a problem :?

My car seems to be quite noisy on start up as well when cold. Sounds very 'tappety' but goes away completely when warmed through. Any ideas ? Car was purchased early December but last serviced in Seotember. Its a 53 plate Avant.

It's normal that you get the slack chain sound which tightens within a couple of seconds. There is a TSB for a whining issue. Details HERE

I'm near Junction 7 M11.

The TSB is a warranty issue. I haven't had mine done yet.

This is from a user of an US based S4 forum.

http://www.madtrance.com/audi/tsb/

Some don't apply such as the Bolt Torque one as this was (according to my dealer) a US only issue.

i've just found out what my noise on start up is. My dealer changed the front tensioner pulley and stopped part of the noise, but still had clunk at the rear of the engine on first start up. So I recorded the noise so my dealer could listed to it they also have heard it live. We now know what it is..............

Anybody want to guess?????????????????????

Loose or missing engine mount?

Ok i'll tell you, it's the cam chain tensioner loosing oil after standing for a few hour's then the chain rattles then when the oil pressure builds it's clunks in. So they've ordered new chain sprokets ect and are going to take the engine out and change them.

PS I don't think it's the first.
PPS Beechwood Audi have been great. It's just taken a while to narrow it down.

They let me take a V6 TT out for a play on Saturday just to kill some time.

I've noticed a strange noise when we start the car - my wife describes it as "someone clearing their throat and spitting", has anyone else heard anything similar? As a new S4 owner I'm not sure if this is something normal or something I should be worried about.

Thanks,

Mark

PS - Great forum...

Hi, Think I know this one, there is an air pump that puts air into the exhaust manifold's(to keep the green's happy) this was looked at on mine but was not at fault.

"I'm not sure if this is something normal or something I should be worried about?"

This is why we all use this forum I guess, so we can't be bullshitted by bad dealers.
