Alternatives for wheels

Post by nwk00 » Wed Nov 20, 2013 12:39 pm

Car coming in next year and I am already thinking of changes :biggrin3:

I had the dealer measure the stock 19" and he said it's 10.9kg and the Vspoke 20" is 14.1kg. This is just wheels alone without tires. I checked at Tirerack.com and they have high performance tires that are very close in weight even if one is 19" and one is 20". So it becomes an apple to apple comparison for the wheel choice.

I didn't go with any 20" in the end because it doesn't make sense to get heavier rims when I went the extra length to get the carbon brakes, even though I love the V spokes and the Rotors.

So my question is, are there any aftermarket wheels that is lighter than stock 19"?

thanks

Or something spherical for massive drifts and easy parking :biggrin3:

I'd get them to double check those weights though as that difference doesn't sound like the right ballpark
I believe 20's to be forged, which as a process allowed a thinner mass on the wheel, so difference should be in grams rather than several kilos

Think the 20's are forged (made by Alcoa) but not rotary forged as per BBS and OZ etc...

Please pm or email little Glen as we can source something tasteful as well as lightweight for your RS4

The Audi brochure states all the wheels as cast, only the 19" is forged.

From my limited experience in motor sport, I always thought that rotating weight was no way near as bad as static weight. I thought carbon brakes were more beneficial for the constant braking power that these give over the normal discs that will fad with heat... Plus bigger alloys will give you more air around the brakes aiding performance? When I was talking to a load of guys about how they were shedding weight off their imprezas I always suggested they go on a diet first as there was normally a good 10kg's they could lose there for free!!

Haha, exactly that
The bike industry is a more exaggerated version of that. People spend £3k on carbon wheels to save 200g, yet wear 3 layers too many over a 10kg overweight body..
