Carbon Cleaning RS4
Carbon Cleaning RS4
Hi Guys
Just recently bought another 56 plate Audi RS4 (I have 2 in the same year) its not as smooth as my other and i don't get that little pull in high revs, got an audi guy to take off the manifold and as i suspected the valves are caked in carbon (Really bad) - my problem is finding someone to take this job on, I'm in between Edinburgh and Glasgow, got the money just need the right guy to do it.
Anyone close by this way to do this ? i was gonna try terra clean but i don't think it will get this off the valves.
Cheers

Re: Carbon Cleaning RS4
Have a drive down to Unit20....Im sure that they could do this while you wait....Worth the journey as they are top boys.....Unsure of any others apart from MRC & AmD down here in the south

Thanks for your reply - where about exactly is this Unit20 mate ?

Re: Carbon Cleaning RS4
Revolution have done a few too.
Re: Carbon Cleaning RS4
I take it you guys are referring to terra clean - I'm looking for someone to actually take the cylinder head off and clean it.

Re: Carbon Cleaning RS4
I am referring to a clean by hand, AMD charge £500.00 not sure what Unit 20 or Revolution charge but they both do the carbon clean by the same process.
Re: Carbon Cleaning RS4
Ok thanks - do they just take the manifold off or do they actually take the cylinder head out ? just curious as 500 seems to be quite cheap for that.

manifold as this exposes the bits they need to clean

Have a look at the AIrbox flap vac solenoid (located under the air box) common fault it splits and causes a massive vac leak) - you can do a simple test.
The vac pipe has a joining piece on the o/s of the main rad tucked under the front slam panel.
Knock off the EPC light and clear any faults pull the pipes apart at the joining piece and plug the engine side - take her for a spin - there'll be no kick because you have isolated that side of things but just see if the EPC light shows
If its doesn't the air flap solenoid needs replacing (big vac leak and maybe notice ex flaps rattling)
I posted pics of solenoid and replacement in a thread somewhere
- edit - here we go

Only takes 5 mins and a 20 min test drive to check it
Also check all the vac pipes near the manifold mechanisms are free not chaffing or pinching on the actuator arms

I was going to say it sounds like you have other issues not just a coked up engine. There's no doubt your engine will be all coked up but I bet your other RS4 that runs better looks no better with the manifold off (unless it has very recently been cleaned).
Re: Carbon Cleaning RS4
Mines still pulls pretty good but i don't get no kick at the top end as i do in my other RS4 plus it just feels as if its working harder to get there - actually at times in 1st or 2nd gear if i put the foot down at times i got a right flat spot enough to kinda throw you forward a bit but the carbon has to play a good part in it as its totally caked around those valves.Spaceman_RS4 wrote:A might get mine done in the spring ave got a good kick tho and no epc lights
Thanks for that, I'm gonna check this tomorrow while i have some time to burn, thanksROY wrote:Have a look at the AIrbox flap vac solenoid (located under the air box) common fault it splits and causes a massive vac leak) - you can do a simple test.

Yes i suspect its got a leak somewhere due to the sudden loss of power occasionally at high revs, back to low revs its fine, i will do as mentioned above tomorrow though, either way i will get the guys at autohaus to check it all over when he's cleaning it out.MikeFish wrote:+1

The other RS just seems to get up there with little effort, never seen how the valves are on this one but it does have 20K less miles on it.
