Park on the street - talk me out of buying a RS4

Post by vroomvroom » Wed Oct 02, 2013 9:17 pm

Am I mad ??

I am desperately in need of a new car and one of the leading options is a RS4 (and the moment)
However they are a number of circumstances that suggest it may not be a wise choice..

1. Budget could be tight - Max budget is £49k (hoping to source via a private sale)
2. I do about 25k miles a year (current car does 30 mpg, however it has only cost me about £3k a year in deprecation....I assume this number is more likely to be £10k a year in the case of the RS4)
3. I work away from home during the week, and have a town centre flat in a reasonably upmarket town in Hertfordshire, Monday to Thursday night I park my car on the street (pretty much just off the high street) in the 3 years I done this I've never seen or heard of a car being broken into or vandalised. However knowing what a target RS's are is this just a matter of time before it gets out that there is one in the same spot each night.

If I'm being honest, its a bonkers car to be considering for the mileage you do!

Buy a used RS 5 for £35k

Hi
I'll try and give you my opinion if that helps
1) cars are sneaking into that range now, but be weary of ex demo or press cars as they float up occasionally, and I'd certainly not want a car that had been treated like that
2) if you buy a year old car with 10k on the clock for £49k, and put a couple of years at 25k miles on it, a 3yr/60k mile car us probably going to be worth (obviously, depending on spec etc) somewhere around £30-35ish (going by how b7 values were at that point in time)
I do 20k a year in mine and return 20-25mpg on a run
3) my dilemma would be that if you leave a car somewhere visible on a busy street, every Tom, dick and Harry knows the location of 'an RS4'. Therefore, although I don't believe B8 RS4's are the big theft risk (contrary to popular belief on here) in comparison to the high numbers of new RR's and Ftypes that are 'dissapearing', if they do become targets, yours is an easy shot

Hope this helps ?

Cheers for the feedback

The other option is to persuade the mrs she doesn't need a discovery 4 (we only have two kids, a medium size dog and live in a town in Cheshire)

She can the have the RS4 for the week (she only dose 10k miles a year) I'll live with a std rep mobile for work and enjoy the RS4 at weekends !!!

Problem is she bloody loves her big fat 7 seater disco

The other option is a RS3, closer to £30k than £50k, so more like £6k in deprecation however probably an even bigger robbery target sat on the high street every night than a RS4

Buy my RS4 for 15k. A bit of history, a classic car and will hold value better than your current options :)

Depending on which Hertfordshire town you are in during the week, why not rent a garage if you really want the RS4. Depreciation is what it is! I am nr St Albans, and not seen a new B8 RS4 regularly yet.
Other forum discussions are on the life of the 4.2 V8 engines, and so 75k over 3 years should not be a problem, and someone will pay something for the car in 3 years! Perhaps try and get one that had 5 years/90k Audi warranty on it.

Or change your job so you don't have to spend half the week on the M1/M6!?

An Audi dealer probably wouldn't take a three year old RS4 with 75k on the clock in px. Lord knows what a B8 would be worth on that kind of mileage!

Why not buy the RS4 plus a cheap diesel daily driver you can park anywhere to soak up the miles?

4k gets you a Golf Mk5 2.0 TDi 140 with 100k on the clock. Sure, it will cost you in cambelts / clutch and maybe a turbo, but its pocket money compared to the running costs and depreciation of doing 75k in three years in a new RS4.
