Brake Upgrade

Post by moktoya » Wed Dec 01, 2004 2:27 pm

Would like some comment on upgrading from stock brakes to a complete RS4 setup (both f/r). What degree of performance enhancement shall i expect?

I ask becos i keep seeing late S4 having an 8 pad front setup on double piston calipers, which sounds impressive. I simply wonder if it matches up with the RS4 fronts, despite the obvious size disadvantage.

In sum, I wonder if it makes more sense to upgrade to decent aftermkt rotors and pads on stock calipers, or upgrade to a used RS4 caliper/rotor (decent condition) with aftermkt pads. Appreciate your input.

I think you would need 18 inch wheels to fit the RS4 fronts, from memory they are 355mm.

Given choice, I would do aftermarket rotors and pads because I don't think the standard RS4 front brakes are much better than the S4 2 piston 8 pad setup.

I have two S4 cars, one with Porsche front brakes and one standard, unless you are doing track days or are just a plain nutter, you wont get the benefit of the upgrade on the road at normal speeds.
If your car is tuned, then it would be better with an upgrade, however, standard brakes are not THAT bad.

Thx guys, I'm currently at Stage 2+ and running 18" rims. There's possibility of some tracking in the future, and I'm getting a decent price for the used RS4 hardware, so i think I'll probably go for it. Is it safe to assume an increase in unsprung weight at the corners with this upgrade?
