HELP!!! Which RS? im totally confused

Post by S4WON » Tue Jul 23, 2013 2:23 pm

ok, bit of background.. 40 years young. wife, 5 yro. previously owned 2x Integrale, TVR Griff, 306 Rallye, all very different cars and then came my first taste of audi.. a 2000 S4 which I can honestly say was the best of all worlds from previous.

anyway, then circumstances changed, less money and went "down" to a 2.8 q, 1.8t q and now drive a 2.0 a4 avant, all great cars btw, just not performance. anyway, now im back in the market with 30k to spend, so what to do?

I thought I had it nailed, RS6 C6, awesome car for the money, but well. i cant explain it ive just gone off it, maybe because the C7 is out but is out of my range. dunno. so then i thought rs4 b7..but then I read about s4 b8s and tuning!!! argghhhhh!

now today, ive totally lost the plot and am thinking rs3 !

so heres the question:

My wife has the car in the week for school runs/local stuff (s4?)
I drive maybe once or twice a month 100 miles on motorway to parents (RS6?)
the rest of the time I maybe want to blat around B roads for fun (rs3? rs4?)

i cant make my mind up. I know its my decision and I need to drive them all, but what would you choose and why?

thanks all, this is driving me nuts!

I would go with a 25k S4 with a map, pulley, exhaust, filter, lowered and spaced. It will have amazing performance. I know MRCs did 0-60 in 3.5s however I expect this had more than just the stage 2 work I mentioned. The S4 also a nice interior and is a nice place to cruise in.

I would expect the S4 to be great fun on B roads with these mods as well. Although you may need to uprate the brakes as well.
2014: 8V S3, Scirocco (mistake)

2010: 1.8T Octavia VRS

I would go B7 RS4, it is such a drivers car in comparison to the rest. It has amazing road to steering wheel and pedal feedback, a more aggressive profile and is a lot of car for the money.

Of the others I have driven from your options I found them to have little feedback from the road and felt a little light on the steering, an unfortunate case of over engineering by Audi. They are all great cars and everyone on here has their favourites though.

Another thing is there are a huge number of owners and with the experiences of the forum members we pretty much have an answer or educated guess about any problems that may come up but ultimately you need to get to take them for a test drive.

A good question to answer would be "how much do you want to spend tuning and tweaking"?

A B7 RS4 is very good out of the box and very different to an S4.
Sure, with some cash spent you can make the s4 as fast in a straight line... but if that's your thing then there are some other quick options.

For B roads outright pace is really secondary - you want a car that you can feel and work with. The C6 (as good as it is) will never be a B road type of car in the same way the other are or could be. fuel economy on the 100 mile trip will be a lot too (don't even mention the b roads!).

Also, how long are you going to keep the car? If you are looking to sell say within a year or two then a stock car will most likely be better. I figure that you don't get any money back on mods and you then also have to face a reduced market as many people don't like mod'd vehicles.

B7 RS 4 without question.

S4 has great potential, but requires time effort and money to get it to where a B7 is right out of the box with the exception of ourright brute torque.

But B7 has it all:

Looks
Sound
Brakes
Handling
Power

Just need to find a good one (harder and harder) and be happy to put up with slightly older tech (ICE etc)

Thanks all, very useful.

DK, in terms of "must haves" on the RS4, what do you suggest or/also what do I need to avoid?

TIA!

Plenty of info on here, plus a buyers guide.

Can't really go wrong tbh whatever spec you choose...just find a good one (normally a forum car!)

Thanks BlackPhantom.. but.......... ive had an offer accepted already on a great car from a forum member! a bit of paperwork to do but should have the car in a couple of weeks! very excited, so much so in fact that I cleaned out the garage in preparation today. my wife knows something is going on, I will attempt to smuggle it in under the cover of darkness, change the locks and hope she doesnt go out there and notice, ever!

B7 RS4.

At the end of the day I just felt that the 6 was a little too big for the twisty country lanes I live in. And the 3 just doesnt seem to give the same RS feeling, as good a car as it is.

Hi buddy
Im sure you wont regret it. I toyed with several marques for a few weeks but non of them ticked all the boxes like the RS4 does. Like you Im counting down the days, hours minutes and seconds until I collect mine on 15th.

So whats the spec of your RS bud?

Congrats.....and look forward to hearing all about your new baby!!!!
