Fuel consumption
I know I've posted on here before (and called a pussy for it) but my daily commute of 64 miles consistently returns an mpg of between 23 an 24 mpg. I know something is wrong or there's been delays on the road if it drops below that. Anyhoo. Over the last week or so I've been 'experimenting' by turning off the aircon - just opening the windows to keep me cool. I was interested to know what difference it made to the fuel consumption - I thought may 1 more mpg or max 2 if I was lucky. Well surprisingly (at least to me) it's been in the mid 27's mpg and I even saw 28.2 earlier!

Re: Fuel consumption
Only just managing 18mpg for first time in over 2 years of ownership. I usually do a 30-40 mile trip when I take it out and thats on A roads...

I should add mine is predominately motorway...
Re: Fuel consumption
That's a shocker. I can't believe it makes that much of a difference. Imagine how much power it's soaking up, too. Right, that's it. A/C never going on again!
I have done this experiment in other cars and it has never made the slightest bit of difference. I wonder what's different about the Audi.

Re: Fuel consumption
Strange cause having the windows open causes drag. There was a test done on one of the cars shows a few years back and pretty sure having the windows down mad the mpg worse. Our cars shouldn't really struggle with an air con pump cause it has soooooo much POWER. I would say that newer air con systems are more efficient now than 10+ years ago. I have to admit I do like the sunshine(
)roof open to let the sun shine on my schlap in this weather. Damn it, you have mad me want to go out in the car the weekend now.

Re: Fuel consumption
I get 19mpg aircon on auto low all the time

Re: Fuel consumption
Maybe some of the improvement is not driving quite as fast as usual because the windows are down.chunky79 wrote:Strange cause having the windows open causes drag.

Re: Fuel consumption
Tank is either full or empty. Anything in between is just having fun

Recycling dinosaurs for fun
Re: Fuel consumption
I did 150kleptons yesterday with the sunroof wide open and the aircon on fullbore, seemed ok, couldn't hear the stereo though...

Re: Fuel consumption
I never look at the MPG and couldn't care less. If people buy these and worry about hypermiling, amazingly, they have bought the wrong car.sweegie wrote:Tank is either full or empty. Anything in between is just having fun
