Is there anywhere I can read up and download 'unofficial' the sat nav software and firmware updates?

I've only read posts of people bricking their units by trying.

I've done it quiet successfully on my VW RNS510 in the past. As long as I can get my hands on a site with the official firmware and sat nav images...its pretty straight forward.
