new BMW engines

Post by DuncS3 » Wed Oct 27, 2004 11:57 am

Alledgedly there will be a 3 series 330 Turbo, supposedly around 340 bhp, plus new M3 which we all know is supposedly a 400 bhp V8.

Also talk of the next Mini generation Cooper S with a turbo instead of a supercharger.

Makes you wonder why Audi didnt go the turbo route with the RS, considering, in my eyes, Audi is special for Turbo AWD cars (aka URQ)

Doesnt make the 420 bhp 'RS'4 Saloon sound too special does it?

The story goes that Audi steered away from turbos and superchargers to save costs.........Merc have been using superchargers for a while, but have now found that it is more cost effective to use turbos as they have become so much more common and therefore cheaper. To get 420 bhp from a normally aspirated engine is no mean feat, AMG managed high 200's from 3.6 ltr straight six, but the engine was so fragile, then managed 320 from 4.3ltr V8 which was less fragile but never the less at its limits. BMW have perfected the art of big power without forced induction with M5 and M3, but has only been possible with the development of variable cam/valve timing, but their Vanos control units for this function are still not as reliable as they should be, causing the highest percentage of mechanical failures......... discuss as the man behind the lecturn would say :beerchug:

Your right, if you read the M3 forum the amount of threads about blown M3 engines is incredible - considering people went ape over dodgy coil packs on Audis...

.....And bendy wheels on RS4's!

I must say its good to be back to twin turbos again, and has been mentioned its the ultimate irony that they are in a Beemer, and a diesel one at that.

It really does feel like my old S4. Bucketloads of torque from tickover and effortless pace.

And yes, the engine from my 535d will be making its way into the next 3 series
