To save a grand or 2 is a significant saving if the problem is something as simple as a failed o-ring or incorrect filter.

If mine went I'll stick with my original box and take it to somewhere I trust. I'll know the history of it and I'll see the fault with my own eyes before any further work is carried out.

The exchange rebuilt boxes, aren't they usually previously faulty units? Do ZF completely strip down inspect and measure every single component in the box to ensure within tolerances and record them? Do they replace all the bearings?
Also do they put the box on a test bed to ensure the box is working correctly, that pressures and flows are all correct and it is all recorded for the purchaser to see?

If this info cannot be obtained there is a possibility we are in no better position by going with the costlier option.

I'm on gearbox No2, coming up to 115K. Replaced by PO at 85K.

ZF replace every single component in the box other than the case.
ZF wrote: Remanufacturing brings the product back to the original OE production standard, usually in agreement with the OE/OES and offers the following features:

ZF quality standard including the latest technical updates (software and components)

Final test to ZF test protocols and full factory warranty

Guaranteed supply of ZF genuine parts

Cosmetically the product is returned to ‘as new’ by using the latest wet blast and ultrasonic cleaning processes

Fixed price agreements Service exchange programmes to ensure immediate availability

Volume optimisation enables manufacturing production style processes are employed
Sounds good to me. I'd rather that than Bob the Gearbox guy in Redditch changing things that look a bit worn to him.

Maybe I'm being thick here but I'm not seeing where it states that all internal components are replaced with new? Just new components are guaranteed ZF items?

Either way I'm inclined to go with the better the devil you know mantra, take it somewhere local with a good reputation and everything is kept in house so to speak. Soon as one company takes out the box and another supplies, when you come across issues it can be a nightmare to sort as both companies take advantage of the grey area created.

One thread, just one thread, in the C5 RS 6 forum that didn't mention gearbox rebuilds. I knew it were too good to be true, now it's ruined.

Shoppinit wrote:This is the problem with spurious box rebuilds... To save a grand or 2, people will have them "rebuilt" instead of getting a new (exchange) box and who knows what is or isn't changed. If there's a duff spring in the ATF pressure regulator, or a hairline fracture in an ATF pipe going to a clutch, and it isn't spotted, then the box will just fail again once the pre-existing problems do their thing on the new components. The fact that people are putting them back together with the wrong ATF filter doesn't go far to reassuring me on the overall competence of these box rebuilders.

That's not to say that there aren't any good rebuilders out there.
I don't think QST are spurious gearbox builders and they did the first rebuild.

I'm fairly certain QST don't 'rebuild' gearboxes.

Well if even the people that QST use can't get it right, I'm *definitely* going for a remanufactured box!

Yet here you are, still hanging out in here. The hardest thing about letting go of my car is that I walk past it every morning and every evening, I cannot see the gearbox from any angle, nor would I want to. If i owned a C6, I'd rather stare at its gearbox and dream what should've been. The C5 is such a 'right' looking car.
No matter where you go, there you are.

I do occasionally miss it, mainly the noise/looks. The C5 forum is home now, no matter what I buy, or how many box/DRC/Baku threads I have to endure. Get used to it.

So you will prefer the c5 forum over ANY other car forum?
