If it's slow to engage into gear and all of the auto box letters on the dash light up once it does go into gear, it's going into Limp mode which is usually 5th gear with the TC slipping to allow you to drive it home.

The 5HP24A is famous for wearing the main bearing between the drum that holds Clutch pack A. This holds 1-44th gears. As the bearing fails, it allows the drum to move more and more until eventually, the drum moves far enough that the o-ring holding the oil pressure to the clutch pack fails. Then you have less than enough oil pressure for the clutch discs to be held, the revs shoot up... the ECU realises that the speed sensors are reading different amounts from what they should (hence the fault codes) and throws it into 5th gear (different clutch pack) and you drive home in Limp mode.

The fix isn't that hard to do... getting the gearbox out is though!

The TC doesn't usually go wrong on these gearboxes and I have say, I don't think that yours has a problem. It's doing what it should.

Gearbox rebuild time. Get the car to Unit 20 or Chester Transmissions.

This is exactly what is wrong with mine. You mention about the oil pressure - would it make any difference if I were to add more oil to the gearbox? At the moment my car wont even go into Limp mode. Seems as though she is locked in P and wont register any other gear. Cant even push her out of the way...

More oil won't make any difference mate, thicker oil will to get you out the crap but even this will thin down when warm.

Good morning MG

Good info above (if correct anyway)

Have you rebuilt one of these boxes at all or have you seen inside one after failure? When the bearing fails it must wear the casing of the box away too, when you say it is an easy fix do you mean the casing is just changed or is a speedy-sleeve fit? I'm just curious.

Cheers.

Sounds coherent, one failure mode amongst many others.

Limp mode is 4th gear, not 5th.

According to the VAGCOM, my car goes straight to 5th when moved from P into D

All of the 5HP24A's that I've been around use 5th in Limp mode. When the usual failure occurs, 4th won't drive either as it's within clutch pack A that doesn't have enough oil pressure.

Yours could have other issues and be using 4th instead, I only know a little about these gearboxes and am happy to be proved wrong if I learn something in the process. :)

That the best you can do Grizz? Im getting mine rebuilt by a local company here in Northern Ireland for £1900 + VAT. I had considered yourselves but i'm afraid you're very overpriced, even though you do get great reviews

There's a seal in the torque converter that fails, Audi allegedly modified them in later torque converters. If the warranty company cough up for the converter I expect you will have to pay for a box replacement / rebuild. Do not bother having just the converter replaced as the box will fail shortly after.

I suspect they just rip the box out at that price.
